The purchase I have been keeping at the top of my list for this year's check from the IRS is a leather hat from Head'n Home, because I have been envying icebluenothing's since I first saw it eight years ago (and then some).
My vague plan was to get one of the three top hat styles: Eldorado, Topper, or Stove Piper. I think Topper is my least favorite, but I'm not sure enough to leave it off the list.
Then again, I could get a black suede fedora, and their Silverado is also very handsome.
Whichever one I get, I plan to remove the band (or order plain if they will let me) and make my own band/embellishment, probably involving red Chinese brocade, gaudy feathers, and perhaps vintage costume jewelry. (This may leave the fedora out on the face of it.) I've been thinking about this for quite a while and saving up items.
