laptop now fixed!

Sorry I've been absent... my laptop went into the shop because I got my mom's camera chip stuck in it, and then various things cascaded from that, but it's all better now.

Oh. looking back, apparently I already posted about that... well, anyway, it's fixed now. So I have no excuse not to post :)

Nedward started school at Stepping Stones Academy, which is really more of a daycare, but that's okay as we're not looking to put him there long-term. (The local Montessori wouldn't take him short-term, which is why he's not there.) He likes it okay, but he's clearly unsettled by all the upheaval in his life. Keeps asking for Daddy. Whenever time zones permit, we call B on the phone or on the webcam and they visit.

Nedward and Papa Bill have a fun game, which involves Bill tying a 4'-long rope into complex knots and then Nedward untying them in a matter of moments. The kid's got Houdini in himself somehow.

Last week my brother Nic and his best friend Adam were here, and we went to all the festivities surrounding the opening of Hawai'ian Modern, the exhibition honoring my grandfather at the Honolulu Academy of Art. (But please ignore that website, I just looked at it and my god it's a mess. I have to call the Academy tomorrow and try to get them to fix all the typos!) The exhibit is nice even if the curator is a monumental putz, and it was lovely to see Nic.

Here's Nedward, future architect, entertaining himself with blocks at the opening reception.

We also went to the Honolulu Aquarium, where Nedward fell in love with monk seals. But the tidepool exhibit was okay too :) This one is for gmtarkin - Hermy the Hermit Crab has Hawai'ian cousins!

In theatre news:
* Saw Plaid Tidings at Manoa Valley Theatre, which was cute.
* Saw Fiddler On The Roof at Army Community Theatre, which was painful. ACT is apparently truly a "community" theatre, in that they cast anyone who auditions. The Tevye was good, and many others were marginal, and some were outright ouch. However, watching the leader of the Russian Army being played as an impersonation of Carson Kressley from Queer Eye was pretty damn funny. Also, Jorge Garcia from Lost was in the audience, and I went over and thanked him for his work - had to, because he's my very fave character on that show! He was very sweet and gracious, so that was fun.
* Most relevantly, I spent several hours volunteering at Diamond Head Theatre, as they were in tech week for Meet Me In St. Louis. That was excellent fun. Karen Wolfe, their costume head, is awesome; and I learned that Oahu is in DIRE need of costumers. Seriously. I could almost write my own ticket. In that vein, Karen took me over to Manoa today to meet their producers, but I'm not going to write more about that just yet....

Today, Nedward's weekend cough turned juicy and he developed a 102-degree temp, so we had a mellow day. I'm hoping he improves tomorrow... send good thoughts?

Okay, that's all I can think of at the moment. I will leave you with this image of Santa & Mrs. Claus bathing their feet in the City Hall fountain, giant fiberglass sculptures which are set up at Christmas time as part of Honolulu City Lights. Mele Kalikimaka!
