Title: Diamond in the Rough
Author: Mai
Pairing: JongHyun x Jessica, former DongHae x Jessica
Rating: G
Word Count: 500+
Summary: There is more to JongHyun than meets the eye.
Note: Because it felt necessary to post something. Ending is a bit abrupt - I'm not sure how to continue it. Suggestions are welcome!
Her dearest friends like to tell Jessica that she is not who she seems to be. Unanimously proclaimed ice princess with a fragile heart - there are layers upon layers to her that no one has yet been able to uncover.
"It's like you're hiding something, because you're afraid to be hurt again," Tiffany elaborates.
It's not a well-kept secret, though - everyone knows how difficult the DongHae break up was for her. But she's over it now and wishes everyone else would stop dwelling on something that could never be, anyway.
"I don't try to hide anything," she protests. "When I say I'm fine, it means I'm fine. Sometimes things are just like they seem."
Jessica sees people for who they are. She sees herself as a member of So Nyuh Shi Dae, up and coming Korean female idol group, and she sees DongHae as a member of Super Junior, Korea's top male idol group. Idols don't date idols - that's the way of the world.
When she meets JongHyun, she sees an annoying boy with a powerful voice who will probably make it very big in this industry with the right kind of promotion. She sees him in her shoes only a year ago and, no matter how often he flirts with her, she brushes him off with every attempt.
But JongHyun is more than meets the eye, ONew insists. "A diamond in the rough," he adds, trying out a newly learned English phrase. "A treasure, but not an easy one to recognize at first. Covered in layers of caked up mud and dirt. Buried underneath layers and layers of sand." His graphic description is unnecessary, but the sincerity in his words is understood.
Maybe to ONew, JongHyun can be more than just another member of SHINee, but Jessica's seen where the path most idol relationships lead.
"I'm sorry, but I can't."
She thought that would be enough, that word of her relationship with DongHae would get around and he'd understand this couldn't be possible. A relationship between them would be doomed to scandal and unnecessary drama. They'd be torn apart by the company, their fans, their duty to their separate groups.
But JongHyun is full of surprises and grand gestures. He makes CD mixes, sends her pretty poems turned lyrics, tapes individual post-its all over her wall listing all the things he likes about her (from her hair right down to the Jessica effect), and even convinces her best friends to participate in his elaborate schemes.
Her favorite is when he shows up on her doorstep with two tickets to a 'private screening' of her favorite Daniel Henney movie, taking place right in her apartment on a night her bandmates are all conveniently out.
"What if someone finds out?" she asks, when the credits start rolling. "Aren't you afraid?"
He grins and she expects him to respond with his usual arrogance. He's always seemed so certain that nothing could possibly touch him. But his words are not the ones she expects. "About our careers? Sure, I am. But life's meant for taking risks."
Perhaps ONew was right - there is more to JongHyun than meets the eye, after all. Maybe that means there's more to Jessica, too.
