I think right after the hundred page mark you start questioning it with every page. I know I got stopped on Harry Potter 4&5 in the early hundreds (at this point I refuse to finish 5), as well as Fellowship back in Middle School.
You should just skip to book 2. If the characters and story are that lacking, it shouldn't be hard to dive right in.

I usually stop before page 50 or finish at all costs. I'll admit that's not rational behavior.
