Boromir had woken him during the night, weeping, full of grief and terror. Aragorn held him as he clawed his way out of the nightmare, and Arwen padded around the bed to climb in bed behind him, stroking his hair and murmuring words of comfort until he’d calmed.
"I'm sorry," Boromir said at last. "I didn't mean to wake you."
"Shhh … " Arwen murmured, sliding her arm around his chest. "Was it the same … "
"The same nightmare. Yes." He'd told them about it, the first time; that he had tried to take the One Ring from Frodo, then died pierced by Orcish arrows. How he could feel the wounds for a time even after he'd wakened. The dreams had become less frequent as months had passed into years, but never entirely ceased.
Pressed against Boromir, Aragorn felt him trembling, even now that he was awake. He kissed his forehead. "It was only a dream."
"It might not have been. Had Frodo wandered away from Sam, as I dreamt he did … ”
"It is a path you did not walk," Arwen murmured into his neck. "Whatever the reason, we are grateful."
"Very grateful," Aragorn said. He kissed Boromir on the mouth, feeling the other Man's lips part beneath his. But before the kiss could deepen, he moved lower, to kiss Boromir between the collarbones, then over the heart that, but for Samwise Gamgee's sharp eyes, might have been stilled forever.
"I don’t think he’s going to be able to sleep if you continue," Arwen teased gently.
"I know," Aragorn said, as he kissed his way lower. "But after such a nightmare, we should give him better dreams."
