Flint Manor Christmas Party

Dec 22, 2023 21:05

The Flint Manor Christmas party was not Theo’s favorite event at Flint Manor. I mean, he enjoyed a good party as much as anyone but prepping for the party always stressed him out so much. He just couldn’t enjoy it as much as he’d like ( Read more... )

"How'd you get champagne?" Everyone is having fun but her. It sucks.

"Carefully," Bolly says like this explains anything, but he's not without charity, so he deftly snags an empty glass from a passing tray and carefully pours half his champagne into it, before holding it out for Flora. "But that's all you're allowed, okay? You don't want Grampa Mike mad at you."

She takes it, but she's pouting. "Everyone always leaves me out and everyone has more fun than me." Her brothers have each other, Sofie has Lot and Blue, Bolly has Auggie. She's always alone.

"I literally just gave you champagne," Bolly complains. "How is that leaving you out?"

"You gave me half of your champagne and then told me I couldn't have anymore. Now you're going to go off and do your Bolly thing and I'll be by myself watching you all have fun."

Bolly sighs. "C'mon, Fluff. Can't you make your own fun? I'm just listening to people talk, that's super boring. Don't you have pets to play with?"

"Papa doesn't let us bring our pets. It makes the old rich people uncomfortable." She shrugs. "Everyone forgets about me." Because she's not Sofie. "Blue won't even talk to me, he keeps looking for Sofie. He'll usually dance with me at least once but not this year."

Bolly snuck Cromwell in one year. It was the best. He decides he should probably not say this. He also probably shouldn't mention the bit where he distracted Grampa Mike so Blue and Sofie could have whatever a 'moment' is. So he settles on, "You can dance with me for a bit. And then I bet if you find wherever my brother is hiding," which is likely the library, "he'll dance with you too."

She smiles, "Thanks, Bolly," she leads him out to the dance floor. "You remember when we used to play hide and seek here?" They discovered all the secret passages and it was fun. They even managed to get into the basement but the doors (former dungeons) were locked. "I was down in the basement today. I found some journals that belonged to the old evil Flint. One of the doors wasn't locked." Which makes her thinks Papa was in there. Her dad would never bother.

What? "What?!" How is he only hearing about this now?! "Did you bring them out? Do you still have them? What was in them?" This is possibly the most interesting thing that has happened at the party!

"Yeah, I have them. There's ten of them. They're in that hidden passage way by the back stairs." She's proud of herself. "I haven't told anyone yet. I read some of them. They're mostly awful. He really was just mean. The way he talked about his wife and Papa and Aunt Mal...it's awful. He was in love with Uncle Adrian. I saw one passage where he admitted it." She pauses, "There's stuff about Greyback. How he helped him. He was the worst." She won't tell him about the part she read where he locked Papa in a closet for over a day because he had a smart mouth it made he want to cry. "There's stuff about death eaters and all that." How can they be related to that awful old man? "Some potions stuff too but I didn't understand it."

"Gross." And it is, but it doesn't make him want to read the books any less. Because Alfie is right in that you should care about what people are now, not what they were, but Bolly also thinks he's wrong in that there's no value in knowing what they were too. The trick is knowing and not letting it affect how you behave now. He can do that, right? Yeah, of course he can. "I wanna see. After we dance, though, right?"

"Ok, we'll dance and then we'll go look," she pauses. "But just us. You won't tell anyone else." She amneds, "Except Auggie, he can know. But not the others" She lowers her voice, "We have to be careful. If papa finds out it'll make him sad. You know we're not even supposed to talk about the old man. He's the one who broke Aunt Charlotte." Among other things.

"Yeah." Which makes him sad. JT's mum, and he would never say this where JT could hear him, probably should never have been a mum. It's weird being related to really cool people, like Grampa Fred, and really horrible people, like Great Grandfather We Don't Say His Name Flint at the same time. He makes himself think about something else. "Maybe if we can duplicate them, we can keep a copy and sneak them back."

"You'll have to do it," Flora doesn't have a wand yet. She just turned 11 and she's not supposed to go to Hogwarts until next year but she's not planning to go. She wants to be tutored at home so she can keep her training schedule for her skating. She kinds of wishes she could do both but she doesn't see how. Like she loves quidditch but she stopped playing kidditch and playing with her siblings and cousins because she's scared of injury. "But that's the best plan. Papa must have been in there he might realize they're missing soon."

"I think I know how," Bolly says, but mostly that means he knows the spell exists. But Auggie will know more, he's sure. They just have to dig his brother out from whatever book he is under. He starts humming absently along with the Christmas jingle they're waltzing to.
