How can you be so many women
to so many people, oh you strange girl?
-Sylvia Plath

Lee Sunny is a short and petite girl with duck-like lips and a small nose and a voice that always seems a pitch higher than normal. She waddles rather than walks and has a million different cute expressions for every situation. She’s the kind of girl that’s always bouncing with energy and joy and many people can’t help but smile when they talk to her.

She’s supposed to be adorable and cuddly, the kind of girl you just want to pick up and hug or put in your pocket and take home with you if it were possible and not all kinds of illegal and creepy.

But try as she may, Tiffany just can’t think of her as cute. It's not that Tiffany doesn't think she can't pull it off, it's just that it's always obvious to her that Sunny is acting. Every twitch and squeal is a carefully maneuvered plan and Tiffany's mind could never correlate the word “cute” with “Lee Sunny” like her classmates. And it’s a small tiny fact that eats her up inside, chewing on her brain in that annoying sort of way that won't let her sleep or think peacefully.

---

Tiffany can recall a time, and honestly this is probably what started it all, where she had an encounter with a spider, a large nasty thing that seemed too big for reality and certainly had no place crawling across her textbook while she studied in the park. Tiffany had screamed and freaked out as she was wont to around insects and arachnids and then Sunny walks by so calm and indifferent and doesn't hesitate to grab the book to fling the spider into the bushes. And then, with a smile that seems so different (not cute but cool) she hands the book back, asks her if she's okay and leaves, steps firm and expression peaceful, despite the encounter with a dinner plate sized spider.

Tiffany thinks its the coolest thing she’s ever seen.

---

Tiffany is lucky enough to share a few classes with Sunny and it makes the act of observing all the more simpler when she can grab a seat several rows behind the other girl. Tiffany has started carrying a pink notebook around where she keeps track of all of Sunny's different mannerisms and observations.

From what Tiffany has gathered, the only time Sunny is not trying to be cutesy is when she’s with her best friends Sooyoung and Taeyeon. Sunny will smile adorably at her classmates, friends and acquaintances all alike, and she'll pout at her teachers when she answers a question wrong but with those two, she doesn't act at all. They’ve been together since kids and though they all go to different schools, they always manage time to hang out outside of school. Tiffany can't help but stare whenever she comes across them hanging out at coffee shops after school. Sunny will usually be slouching and making jokes inbetween playing her video games and she always wears plain hoodies and baseball caps in dull colors and just seems so relaxed.

And sometimes, when Tiffany stares too much she'll notice Sunny is curvier than she first thought and there's a sensuality to her lips that makes them seem so kissable. And that's when she has to look away and remind herself she’s only observing because she’s curious.

She's not doing it because she likes the other girl or anything like that.

“Tiff, we need to talk.”

Tiffany looks up from her notebook to address her best friend. Jessica's face is blank like usual and Tiffany can only guess what they need to talk about. A thousand different potential topics bounce around in her head but nothing comes to mind regarding Jessica. But then again most of her time and thoughts have been dedicated to Sunny recently.

“Yes, Jessi?”

“Look, I’m not going to tell you who you can and can’t like, but you really need to stop stalking Sunny.”

Tiffany immediately blushes at the accusation and her reply comes out painfully loud, drawing the attention of the rest of the students in class.

“It’s not like that!”

Jessica gives the curious bystanders a menacing glare as a warning to mind their own business as Tiffany ducks her head in embarrassment.

“The stalking or the fact you like her?”

“Neither.”

Jessica doesn't look convinced at all and instead picks up Tiffany's notebook.

“Then why do you have a list of Sunny's facial expressions with tally marks next to them? You don't think keeping track of the number of times she winks everyday isn't considered stalking?”

Tiffany quickly grabs the notebook back. “It's really not what you think, Jessi.”

Jessica sighs. “Look, you don’t have to deny it in front of me, I’m not judging you for liking women. If anything I'd rather judge your taste in cutesy people.”

“Sunny isn’t cute.” The statement comes out of her mouth before she can stop it.

“What?”

“I said, Sunny isn’t cute.”

“Are we talking about the same person here? Have you seen how she is?”

“But that’s just all an act,” Tiffany tries to explain, “the real Sunny is different.”

Jessica quirks an eyebrow. “ How so?”

Tiffany takes a deep breath and hugs her notebook to her chest. “Well, she just is. She's more cool, like nothing can bother her. Maybe even sexy.” The last part is mumbled and Tiffany almost laments how eager her brain is to think of Sunny's body.

“So you're watching her because you want to now why she acts so cute all the time?”

Tiffany gives a small nod.

Jessica looks over Tiffany's shoulder. “There’s your answer.”

Tiffany turns and sees Sunny standing there, a nonchalant grin on her face. Tiffany's jaw drops before turning to Jessica in question. Her best friend doesn't even look ashamed at the set up.

“She came to me asking why you were stalking her. I decided to take care of the problem directly. Now talk.”

Jessica walks pass the two without another word, far quicker than expected of the usually lethargic girl. Just quick enough to escape Tiffany's eyes which plead for her to stay because she doesn't think she can handle this alone.

Tiffany's aware that Sunny is watching her now but she can't find it in her to look up from her desk. She knows her face is red from blushing and embarrassment has dug itself deep into her skin, making her feel itchy and warm all over. What does a stalker supposedly say to her stalkee?

“So you think I'm sexy?” Sunny smirks and Tiffany can’t help but blush further, as she notices Sunny walk closer. “You know, if you're that curious about me, all you had to do was ask. We could've even set up an interview. Now there's an idea. How about it?”

Tiffany blinks, as if she hadn't heard the question at all. Then she nods, slowly.

“Okay, dinner at 7 at local diner I always go to on Friday, you know the one. It's a date, alright?” Sunny winks and it's so very different from her usually cute ones. This one is coy and teasing.

Tiffany watches numbly as the other girl walks away, hips swaying in a way that makes Tiffany's brain burn. Instinctively she reaches for her notebook and with her mechanical pencil, makes another tally mark in her “winks” category. She pauses, staring at the dirty gray line before erasing it. She brings her pencil to the bottom of her list and writes a new category, “sexy wink” and draws a mark there instead.
