Can a monster ever be loved? Sooyoung wonders.
A/N: For unnideul Post 3

Part I

Something caught in her throat at this second thanks, when she'd threatened him so brutally. When you're a monster, she thought, you are thanked and praised for not behaving like a monster. She would like to restrain from cruelty and receive no admiration for it.
-Kristin Cashore, Graceling

Sooyoung tries these days to be neater when she does her job. Something always seems to hurt inside when Tiffany sees her all messy and still tries to smile through it, though the girl has never been all too adept at covering up her heart. It’s a constant painful reminder of what separates the two women other than height and a couple of months.

But the neck snaps too easily this time, the older man’s words melt into ugly gibberish as crimson bursts from the side of his neck and all over her face and clothes. The body flails slightly before going still and Sooyoung slings the dead weight over her shoulder with ease as she leaves the spacious office. Scattered over the plush carpet are groaning men, still alive with shattered and twisted limbs. Sooyoung steps over them without a single thought, they're just as dead to her as the sack of flesh she carries.

It’s all part of the job.

Hyoyeon is the one that sees her first, waiting patiently by the patrol cars outside the building. She gives Sooyoung a slight nod at the sight of her before giving the order for the other officers to enter the building. There isn't any sort of meaning attached the greeting, it simply is what it is, but Sooyoung wonders about it anyways. Hyoyeon has always been a puzzle, the woman has been neither overly enthusiastic in trying to welcome her to the team nor had she glanced at her with contempt, disgust or fear. There seems to be a simple neutral understanding between the two.

Sooyoung hands the body over to some men to bag up and immediately looks for Tiffany.

Part of her wants to wipe the blood from her face and hair but the other more urgent part of her just wants to see the other girl. The hurt she'll feel when Tiffany flinches slightly at the sight of her will pass.

It always does.

---

Tiffany always likes to start their sessions at a café, usually local, where the prices are fair and the employees know each and every customer by name. In the early morning there’s rarely a rush so there’s a nice ambiance that settles over the store. It’s the opposite of everything Sooyoung is and maybe, that’s the point. Maybe the silence and calm is a way of measuring her progress. Maybe it’s a way of telling just how inhuman she is.

They’re rarely ever by themselves. Tiffany likes public places, places where a simple shout could draw attention and a raised fist could summon a phone call to the police almost immediately. It's yet another test of her humanity and Sooyoung clings to that thought. She doesn't think she could handle the other interpretation.

She doesn't want to believe that Tiffany could think she would ever hurt her.

But Sooyoung shoves away the sting of all of these realizations because she gets to spend time with Tiffany and really, that’s all that matters. It's what drags her through the day and what made her accept the agreement to work with the police. In exchange for her services in clearing out all of the old gangs that she used to run with, they would lighten her sentence, maybe even transfer her over to one of the nicer prisons where the inmates aren't so eager to maim with sharpened toothbrushes.

These sessions are always simple, Sooyoung would order for them, and then they'd talk. Just like any pair of friends would. Just like Sooyoung always hopes.

It's easy to get lost in the session, to forget the set up and pretend and time always seems to fly when Sooyoung watches Tiffany laugh and smile in that special way she does as she's relating funny anecdotes about her coworkers, Siwon and Jessica.

“Good job today, Sooyoung. I’ll see you later okay?”

And just like that, Sooyoung is reminded (yet again) that she’s not normal. Not human. That the time she just spent with this beautiful and kind girl in front of her was not a get together, not a date but a therapy session for a monster. Sooyoung smiles and hopes the pain doesn’t leak through.

Tiffany leaves Sooyoung at the police station and Sooyoung wonders how many times she's going to watch Tiffany walk away from her without feeling disgruntled and all kinds of lonely.

---

They charge at her with knives and pipes and chains and any other random object that could double as a weapon. She bowls through them all the same, caring only for the target, their leader.

Yuri is strong, with muscled arms and legs and a sort of charisma that allows her to reign in her gang easily. She greets Sooyoung with a sneer.

“So it’s true isn’t it? The mutt’s got a new owner now.”

Yuri breaks three of Sooyoung's ribs, her nose and knocks out a tooth.

Sooyoung strangles her to death.

---

Siwon and Tiffany are the only ones in the office but even by the door, Sooyoung can hear them. Even when they talk in hushed tones, the words still stab at her ears.

Hey Fany,

Yes, Siwon-ssi?

I was wondering, if it isn't too much of a bother, if you wanted to go to dinner sometime?”

Oh. Uh, sure. I'd like that.

Tiffany's smile shouldn't be that bright.

Sooyoung the monster would have barged in there and ripped his head off. Sooyoung the monster would have ravished Tiffany on that desk right then and there, mistaking lust for love and the heat between the rubbing of flesh for a connection.

But Sooyoung the monster who wants to be human simply closes the door and goes to the stairwell.

Sooyoung the monster who doesn’t want to be a monster just cries.
