The curtains are a garish pink and Sooyoung wonders what could have ever possessed Jessica to keep them up, even to this day, especially on the windows facing the street for everybody to see. She thinks she can recall it being mentioned before, amid cheap booze and short brief kisses, with the explanation being that a friend had purchased the eyesores and Jessica herself had been too lazy and apathetic to care about returning them. But that was a conversation that had dissolved away like the rest, replaced easily with touches and heated breathes. Conversations weren’t necessary in their relationship, though Sooyoung always thought it helped to smoothen any sort of tension or at least reduce the discomfort of just how cold Jessica could be at times. Sooyoung couldn’t be like her; apathy and frozen faces only displayed anger for the younger girl, rather than normality.
The ride up the elevator to the upmost floor is quiet, and though it is a weekend, a party night at that for the many college students that littered the area, there seems to be a strange absence of noise running through the halls. Sooyoung fiddles with the key in her pocket as she watches the numbers climb up and up, it’s a replica that Jessica had given her on their third meeting. Sooyoung had accepted the offer in stride, not believing it to be too quick for such closeness. She never bothered to consider how many others also shared the privilege; she never thought there were any. Thinking about it would only annoy her and bring in more complications.
The elevator stops on the final floor and Sooyoung steps off the elevator and onto the hallway with its plain plush carpet and crème colored walls. The silence continues and Sooyoung tries not to strain her ears out of curiosity for any sort of life that breathes through these doors. The walls are thin, Jessica has warned her time and time again, and Sooyoung always has to fight the temptation to scream at the top of her lungs or holler hilarious profanities for fun.
Quietly shutting the door behind her, Sooyoung holds her breath as she kicks off her shoes and tries to sneak into the room. Only the sight of a stranger on the couch stops her short. The two look at each other briefly, trying to understand and comprehend.
Sooyoung then realizes that in this situation she lookd like the intruder, particularly with her exaggerated attempts at stealth and what’s to stop this girl from contacting the police?
The door suddenly opens behind them and both Sooyoung and the girl turn their heads wide eyed at the newcomer. Jessica stands there with a plastic bag containing what Sooyoung can guess to be items from a nearby convenience store. Jessica doesn’t speak, she merely stares at the two of them with a raised eyebrow before shaking her head and walking past the two of them.
Sooyoung immediately heads towards Jessica. “Hey Sica, want to introduce us?”
Jessica sighs and points at finger at the girl on the couch. “Tiffany.” She then points at Sooyoung. “Sooyoung.” Jessica moves past the two and starts to root through her closet. Sooyoung follows, never leaving Jessica’s side. She watches as the other girl takes out different outfits, not even pausing to change into them. The fact that she’s choosing to wear a dress doesn’t escape her notice.
“Are you going out tonight?”
“Yep, got a date.” The reply is thrown back so carelessly, Sooyoung feels a sting of annoyance clouding her surprise.
“What? Why didn’t you tell me?“
Jessica looks amused if not affronted. “I don’t see how that’s any of your concern.”
The comment hurts more than it should.
“Well it should be when we’re doing stuff with each other.”
“I keep on telling you to call in advance but you never listen.”
Sooyoung had never called beforehand because it made their meetings seem too formal and stiff. Though she’ll gladly cite her prankster nature for wanting to surprise Jessica at the most inopportune of moments, part of her has to grudgingly admit that she liked to pretend for all of their looseness, she was still better than some stranger. That Jessica was comfortable enough around her to let her come in whenever.
“So what, you’re just going to leave?”
“Yep.”
Sooyoung grabs Jessica’s shoulders and turns the girl away from her preparation. She was wearing jewelry. Jessica never wore jewelry when they hung out.
“Come on Sica, how about a quickie? We haven’t done anything with each other in a while.”
Jessica breaks away. “Nope. I actually like this person. So sorry, looks like we’re going to have to end our arrangement.”
“Sica~” Sooyoung wraps her arms around Jessica and lays her head on top of the shorter girl’s. Jessica prods her in the chest with her elbow.
“Don’t whine. You know you’re no good at it.”
Sooyoung sighs, defeat mingling with the air. She looks at Tiffany. “So, what’s she doing here? She another friend like me?”
Jessica snorts. “She’s my childhood friend. She’s spending the night here. Oh and unlike you, she actually called beforehand.”
Jessica slinks away, heading towards the door. The lack of a goodbye bites. Tiffany stops her though.
“So what’s your friend doing here?” She tries to be discreet but Sooyoung can obviously tell they’re talking about her.
“She’s staying the night.”
“What! But I’m staying the night.”
“Well, you can’t really expect any sort of planning with Sooyoung. You’re just going to have to put up with it.”
“Jessi, you can’t be serious.”
“Looks like I am. Don’t worry, she’s somewhat decent. Besides you’re good at making friends.” Jessica gives Tiffany a pat on the shoulder as she leaves the two alone in her room.
The two strangers look at each other. Tiffany breaks eye contact first and heads for the closet to remove a large comforter, which she proceeds to lay on the floor.
“What are you doing?”
Tiffany looks up in confusion, believing it to be obvious what she’s doing. “I’m laying out a blanket for you?”
“Why would you do that when I’m sleeping on the bed?” Sooyoung points towards the small single bed neatly placed in the corner.
Tiffany blinks. “No. I’m sleeping on the bed. I was here first.”
“Why don’t we share then?”
Tiffany’s mouth twists into a frown. “Do you usually share the bed with people you don’t know?”
“Beats the floor.”
“But.” Tiffany is speechless to say the least and Sooyoung only grins in response.
“Look I know you don't know me but I’m not going to do anything to you while you’re sleeping. If you’d like we could make a barrier down the middle, though that’s pointless given how small the bed is.”
Tiffany looks back towards the bed and agrees internally. Body contact seemed to be a given were they to both sleep there. Tiffany sighs and nods her head in agreement.
Sooyoung grins and proceeds to lay on the bed, her lanky arms and legs spread out over the entire bed. Tiffany gives her a glare, before sitting on the bed.
“So, how do you know Jessi?”
“We’re friends.”
“Really? I don’t think I’ve ever heard her mention you.”
“Well we’re the special kind of friends." The look Tiffany gives her shows she clearly doesn't get what she's hinting at. "You know, the one’s with benefits.”
“Oh." Tiffany blinks and the meaning sinks in. "Is that why you came over tonight?”
“Well my roommate was planning on bringing someone over and I wasn't going to stick around and watch." Sooyoung rolls over in frustration.
"Which reminds, why are you over here anyways?”
“Is that any business of yours?”
“Hey, you asked me but I can’t ask you?”
“Well you didn’t have to answer.”
“So I’m the better person then?”
“What? No!” Sooyoung winces at Tiffany's loud voice. She's fairly certain everyone on the floor heard that one, that is if there was anyone here.
“I answered the question. To a stranger I shared a deep part of myself. But you aren’t willing to do the same.”
Sooyoung grins to see Tiffany’s troubled expression. She mumbles a response and Sooyoung scoots in, ignoring the widened eyes at their sudden closeness.
“You’re gonna have to speak up. To think, you have such a loud voice but at an actual time I want to hear it you whisper.”
“Hey. Your voice is louder.”
“Quit dodging the question, I want to know what you wanted with my Sica.”
“Your Sica!" Tiffany's eyes widen in realization. "Oh my gosh, you have a crush on Jessi?”
“What? No, of course not.” Sooyoung feigns nonchalance but the question digs deeper than expected.
“Don’t deny it. Oh you poor thing. Falling in love with your friends with benefits has to suck.”
“No, it’s not like that,” Sooyoung says through gritted teeth.
“You don’t have to deny it. I know we’re strangers but maybe that’ll help you better if you talk it over with someone you don’t know.” Tiffany sits closer to Sooyoung, as if to reassure her.
Sooyoung sighs. “Look, if I did have feelings for Sica, and I don’t, why would I tell her friend?”
“Best friend. I’m her best friend. One and only. Don’t get that mixed up.”
Sooyoung blinks. “You bought those horrible pink curtains, didn’t you?”
“They're not horrible, and pink’s a perfectly good color.”
“Are you kidding? Have you seen the weird looks people give passing by?”
“You have no taste. And don’t try to change the subject.
Sooyoung gives a groan as she flops down on the bed. “I don’t love her. I’m just curious.”
“Curious?”
“This is how I see it. It’s like she’s some tightly locked treasure chest. It makes you want to open it no matter what because you know there’s something valuable inside. Can you just imagine how beautiful her smile must be if she rarely shows it? How moving her “I love you” could be if she rarely says it?”
Sooyoung pauses and swallows the rest of her words. It's more than Sooyoung has ever wanted to admit to about why she approached Jessica in the first place and something in Tiffany's knowing yet comforting stare makes her heart beat painfully. She grabs the blanket and pulls it over her.
"Whatever, I'm going to sleep."
Tiffany glances at the lump on the bed and shakes her head sadly. There's so much more she wanted to say, but she suppose finding out the person you loved had found someone else is enough to discourage further conversation. She turns off the lights in the room and climbs into the bed as well, turning away from Sooyoung. The two, though awake, don't talk to one another. Tiffany closes her eyes and tries to sleep while Sooyoung buries her face in the pillow, and lets the scent overwhelm and help her forget.
