Blah, blah, and more blah

Well, the past two weeks have been spattered with annoyances.

One

I was supposed to go to Maryland week before last for a conference as part of my scholarship through NOAA. I wasn't all that enthused about it, but I was looking forward to seeing my parents (they were planning to visit) plus it was a really good opportunity and something good for the resume.

Unfortunately, Eckerd decided they want us to move from summer housing to fall housing the last few days I would be in Maryland. Sooo... We put the bigger stuff in storage and Steve said he'd do his best to move solo. Not much else we could do.

We also decided to de-loft the beds, since that's definitely a two-person job. During the de-lofting, one of the ends of the bed fell solidly on my bare foot. OUCH. It hurt like hell.

Matter of fact, it was still hurting the next morning. I was worried it was fractured so I called the NOAA people and cancelled my trip and went to the doctor. He said it was either fractured or bruised. He could take an X-ray, but said there was no point since he'd recommend the same treatment either way: wrap it up. I declined the X-ray.

The NOAA people weren't happy, but I asked my dad to talk to them. That shut them up.

Several days later, my toe felt much better. I guess it wasn't fractured after all, but it sure hurt like hell for several days, and made me limp a while, too.

Two

Since our bed was in storage, that meant Steve and I had to share a normal dorm mattress. The one in our old dorm was big enough it wasn't much of a problem. However, the mattress in our new room is smaller in width. It was only one night we needed it, but it was miserable. There was not enough space, and I ended up with a sore neck.

Of course, we'd also moved all day the day before, so my whole body was pretty sore. Especially my calfs.

The worst part though: Moving heavy items and the rest of our small stuff with a shoulder that hurt like hell. Moving only made it worse. It calmed down after a few nights on the futon, which was much more comfortable, but still.

Three

Speaking of the futon, we had it in storage along with our two fridges. We used the storage place's moving van to move them. While unloading, I stood up and slammed my head into the edge of the doorway on the back of the van. Right where a screw was. OUCH. It left a bit of a nasty bleeding bump, and it hurt like hell for the next few days.

Fortunately, nothing ill came of it. Yet. Who knows, maybe I'll get tetanus from it yet.

Four (the big one)

When we moved into the dorm Thursday night, I tried connecting to the net. No luck. Not surprising, the network connectivity this summer has sucked. It's gone down at least a half dozen times for me over the last few months.

Tried again in the morning, still no luck. So I visited ITS and tried to get some answers. Amazingly, the guy in charge of networking was actually in his office for once (that never happens) and told us that someone had taken a nail clipper to the cables for the Kappa complex, leaving us without connectivity. They had to replace several thousand dollars worth of cables. He said it should be fixed that afternoon (Friday) or, at the latest, Monday morning.

Of course, it wasn't fixed Friday afternoon.

In fact, it wasn't fixed Monday morning, either.

In fact, it's STILL not fixed.

I'm going on almost a week of no Internet now. And it's driving me insane.

My advisor said they'll have it up for sure by Friday. That's when the freshman show up, and the school will want things perfect for the freshman.

The networking guy returned my call today (I'd called yesterday asking for an update) and told me they'd called in the vendor. They were supposed to have come in this afternoon, but didn't show up. Maybe tomorrow.

With luck, maybe, maybe the Internet will return before a full week passes. I'm not holding my breath.

Five

Here's the kicker. In the midst of all this... Monday was my birthday.

Happy 27th birthday. Get old, move, strain your shoulder, lump your head, and go nuts from Internet deprivation! *glares at the world*

On the bright side, Steve made me a really awesome birthday cake. Took him all day to make. Four layers tall, alternating cheese cake with chocolate cake. It's delicious, and I made him take pictures. So, eventually, when I have Internet again, I'll be posting those pictures. Maybe. If I don't forget.

He also got me a nifty light thingy that I can use at night, it plugs into the USB. Pretty clever, now I can see at night without keeping him awake as badly. :)
