Hated this place. The moment I stepped through those doors into the basement, it all came floodin' back. Fred, Wes, Angel...the blue chick callin' herself Illyria. And what I had done. My part in Fred's death. This was my punishment, this was my redemption. It was never gonna be enough, but for now it would have to do.

Every day I'm here. Least, I think I am. Lost all sense of time and space. Laugh at that if that wouldn't hurt like a son of a bitch. Fuck that demon guy knows his work. Not cut out for small talk either. Kinda gave up after a while. Just lay there now and let it happen. But fuck it hurts.

Today was like any other day. Much like it been up there. 'Course the demon guy did change weapons from time to time, so I guess ya could say there was some variety. 'Xcept today was different. Some dude comes stridin' in, nice as you please, like he owns the place ( ... )

That question does get tedious after a time. Though that may be simply because all of Angel's people sound the same when they ask it. They have no idea who they're speaking to. And I don't get the feeling that it would change their arrogant tone if they did.

"Mr. Gunn. My name is Marcus Hamilton. I'm Angel's new liaison to the Senior Partners."

He sat up readily enough for having just performed his nightly Prometheus reinterpretation. He eyed the Wrath for a long moment before facing me.

I throw a glance in that direction, as well.

"I thought you and I could have a little chat. The Wrath there, he isn't much of a conversationalist. You might have figured that out by now. It's best we let him nap while we talk."

I cross my arms across my chest and smile. "I don't suppose you're enjoying your stay in the holding dimension? The Senior Partners never hear any complaints. But then, the locals rarely have an opportunity to make them."

Hey now, aint that interestin'? The man's the new liaison for Angel and co? Co meanin' me as well I take it. Mean, why else would he be here? 'Less he's here to make fun of me. If that so, I'm gonna have to kick his ass. Aint no one makin' fun of Charles Gunn. 'Xcept Wes did, and Cordy, but I doubt that'll ever happen again ( ... )

"The Senior Partners decided it would be best for everyone involved if Eve...stepped down from her position. She agreed and signed over her duties to me." Along with her immortality. And her immunity to whatever punishment the Senior Partners might decide to dole out.

"I aint got no complaints," Gunn says. Putting all the expense in research and development spent on that implant of his to good work.

His attitude, of course, is one of the reasons he was chosen for the upgrade. The Senior Partners do so like their employees to have a little spunk.

"I'll be sure to pass on your compliments," I tell him, moving along. "Though I'm sure a man like you would hardly submit to the picket fence routine if you werent-" I give our surroundings a meaningful look. "Well. Damned to it. Wouldn't you much rather be off fighting the "good fight" with your "friends"?"
