[ History ] :
It started 19 years ago on July 7th, eleven babies were born that day, only one of which were female. Well, they weren't exactly born but created, they were a group of baby clones with all identical DNA save for little tiny differences. They were created for their bodies, a desperate scientist needing organs to save his daughter did the only thing he could at the time. The small push into human creation was all he needed really, to start researching into human cloning. The scientist's daughter was suffering from Multiple Cellular Failure which made her body break down and she was given a slim chance of survival.
So, the man waited. He created the clones and sent them all out to orphanages around Japan and... just waited. See, each clone was almost... programmed with a magnet inside of them that would eventually bring them together. This was very dangerous of course, considering the clones had an almost animalistic switch inside of them that when together, they would begin to kill one another. A reaction inside of them that would cause them to go berserk when they've touched another and do anything to murder their clone. It was survival of the fittest for the clones, and each one knew that.
Sort of.
The clones didn't know they were exactly clones, only two in particular. The Asterisks, Kikuchi Hiro and Mikumo Gota. They were close to the scientist who originally created them and given this title of an Asterisk at a young age. This meant that they were the ones who knew exactly what was going on. That they were livestock and in the end, only one would survive. Hiro and Gota were given the better chance of survival. In a sort of comradeship in which they would look out for each other, they lived on the sidelines, just waiting to the inevitable day one would kill the other. Gota was the one who would seek out the other clones when the time came and kill them, bringing back certain body parts for the scientist while Hiro would do his own bidding. The show didn't give much light on that.
Though, later in the show they unfortunately find out that the scientist never trusted them. Promising them things such as family (especially Gota) and letting them do his dirty work. In the end, he was just going to have them kill each other anyway and take their body parts. It never mattered to him, he just wanted to save his daughter.
Now that's the basis for it. Hiro's story in particular has to deal with being an Asterisk and trying to find himself because of it. When you first meet him, he seems perfectly happy to be a clone -- yet somewhat off despite it. He willingly seeks out Masamune and pushes him off a roof in the very first episode. "It would be easier if you died now" is the message he gets across.
That's because later on it's found out that Hiro believes Masamune to be the Master Clone, which when killed frees the other clones from the "Laws of Exclusive Providence" which is what happened when two clones are together: they must kill each other. Which actually explains a shitload about Hiro's personality which I will describe in the next section. The basis though is that: Hiro wants to be free to live his own life, which is why he seeks out the Master Clone and attempts to kill him. Masamune happens to not be the Master Clone and is also saved in the same fashion as the scientist from before saves his daughter but that is a whole other story.
Nevertheless, Hiro finds Masamune, clone -> pushes Masamune off a roof -> Masamune comes back to life and oh hey, maybe Masamune is the Master Clone -> Hiro tries and kills him some more and ends up getting caught up in Clone Baby drama. Blah blah lots of things happen to Masamune which Hiro gets caught up in blah. Hiro continues to secretly freak out inside over the fact that hey not everything is actually right with this Clone Baby stuff and maybe he doesn't have to kill or be killed by Gota and maybe what he's doing isn't right and maybe he can be a normal person.
But then Gota dies.
Annnndddd Hiro kind of loses his will to live and do anything but instead keeps involving himself with Masamune and Marika (the girl Hiro may or may not be in love with but keeps harassing and stalking but NEVERMIND THIS OKAY). The reason for this is simple: he needs to get payback on AGEC (scientist dude's company clone place thing) and the only way he can do that is through Masamune's... Masemuness. In the end, he helps them uncover the truth about the Clone Babies, gives his heart up to Marika so she can have a transplant and live and--
And shows up in the last episode alive and well and what the fuck.
OKAY THAT'S IT.
[ Personality ] :
Hiro is... enigmatic for one, like a cat on the prowl. He moves where he wants, when he wants, and to whoever he wants. Only caring for a very small amount of people -- okay only two, Gota and Mirika. The life of a clone is hard, it's hard and nobody understands. At least, that's one of the things Hiro believes. Since knowing that he was a clone -- and basically livestock -- from a young age, he never put much stock into himself. Into anything he did, and just let himself be dragged around by his best friend, Gota. While it was unwilling, and for them, the relationship worked, it still was not the healthiest. Hiro let Gota outshine him in many ways and was perfectly content to let this happen and knowing Hiro, he probably decided when the time came he would let Gota take the "chair" that they had been handed in life -- unless he could find a way to not have to fight over the chair in the first place. Which is what he wanted, badly.
This relationship shows a lot about Hiro actually. That's he's content to fade into the background for one, and that he would pretty much do anything for Gota. Yet-- he's human, Hiro, while a clone, is 100% human and has feelings, thoughts, dreams, and everything of the like. His whole quest through the show shows this so well. He just wanted to live, to be happy and be human but he couldn't, he knew Gota would take the chair and made sure to help in his quest for that. Yet when Gota dies, he changes his goals -- now he just wants to take down AGEC for revenge. Yet, his life afterwards? I'm pretty positive he knew he was going to die in his quest for revenge.
So basically, what I'm trying to say is that-- Hiro is basically a guy who is trying to find himself. He doesn't know where to go or what to do but he knows he doesn't want to just live in vain. Yet growing up with the constant streamline of you-aren't-really-human, he tends to believe that. He doesn't think of himself as much more than just a clone with no real purpose. In the game of musical chairs, there can only be one left after all. Hiro is just fighting so he can give the last chair to Gota.
Yet he guards this! He guards this insecurity so well with his talking in circles, his detached demeanor and his charming words. He's absolutely charming, able to spin together lines that sweep people off their feet or make them doubt themselves or both. He's kind of a master of words in that way, yet he does this to keep his distance. Really, why bother with people who are real when he ... is not. He shouldn't let them bother with him or bother himself with them. It's him vs them in the game of life and he's ready to give up-- for Gota. Seeing a pattern here?
He doesn't think much of himself. He's insecure, he's lonely, and he just wishes for a real family and home. He probably didn't grow up with a family, and in the beginning of the show tries to (or at least inadvertently) teaches Masamune that he should value his life despite everything. While Hiro has always known he's a clone and nothing more and taught that he is nothing more, he still is very jealous of the ones who do have lives and homes and people to return to at night. Yet, it's also because of this jealousy and this attitude that when he does care for a person, he will do anything for them. Gota is one example of this, as described earlier, the other is Marika. The finest example I can give of this is the ending: when he gives up his heart for her because he doesn't have anything else to live for. She was dying and she needed a new heart or else she wouldn't make it. Hiro had been shot and was slowly bleeding to death (though still wandering around and beating people up for... some... reason), so when he knew it was time for him to die he... went to Marika and offered his heart.
And back to the shot and bleeding to death thing, before even offering his heart he made sure to clear the way for Masamune to save what little left of the clones there was. He did this by sneaking into the Bad Guy's HQ and kicking some ass so he could literally clear the way for Masamune to come in and save the day. He didn't need the glory, all he wanted was for Marika to be safe -- and for the killing of the clones to end despite there only being about three left at this point. He still did this all on such little tiny bit of strength then dragged himself back to Marika so he could offer her his heart.
... Which also shows an extreme level of determination when he has the willpower to go about it. He doesn't do it for the glory or morals or anything of the sort. He either does the right thing if it benefits himself or the people he cares about -- which, with the guard up over himself, happens to be a very small amount of people. Yet since it's such a small amount of people, it happens to be so extreme his level of devotion to them. He needs to care for them at all times -- and not in the loving and happy sort of way, no. In the way that shows he's there and his presence is there and they won't be alone but they will have their distance. One could call this stalking, actually. Heh.
He's kind of like an abandoned dog that whenever it gets picked up by a caring owner, will kill for them. He's totally okay with this too. There's also that part of him that... wants to kill his clones, yeah, but thankfully it's mostly because of the Law of Exclusive Providence and he's not really a murderous jackass. Just kind of ... defeated in life. Given up on himself and only doing the things that he views can have some sort of benefit for the people he cares for -- which again are only two. Yet no matter how much he wants to deny it too, there's the small part of him that keeps catching his attention now and again that... just wants to be human. Wants to live a normal life with a family and friends and people who care for him. Yet at this point in time, he probably thinks he doesn't deserve it, sadly enough.
... Which is probably why he tries to show Masamune in the beginning that no, he can't swap out his life and keep only the good stuff. No, he has to appreciate all parts of his life and suicide isn't the answer and that no, he's not worthless-- though he probably doesn't think this at all when he does this. No, he's probably just "swapping" with Masamune to have a brief glimpse and taste of a normal life.
... Which is what he craves and wants. No matter how much he's in denial at times about it.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths: Funnily enough, his strengths do not lie in physical strength. More mental strength and the ability to handle so much despite just being a human. Which he is! Despite the whole clone thing. He's able to protect himself so well from things that might hurt him and guard his mind and body from it. He actually is a pretty good fighter too despite what I said. Very agile and lithe and able to withstand getting the shit kicked out of him. Like the time he was shot and still kicked ass because he needed to get shit done.
His determination and devotion are also great strengths of his, even if he takes them to a dangerous extent sometimes. He is also able to know when things should be done and can do them despite any feelings he has inside. Unless it's morally wrong (and his sense of morals are pretty skewed), he will do it. Like kill a stranger just because they're his clone (ie Masamune)-- buuuuttt that is also kind of a sketchy subject there.
Weaknesses: Now he actually has much more weaknesses than strengths because some of his strengths just so happen to be weaknesses too. There's the he is essentially human bit -- which means despite being strong and able to withstand a lot of stuff, he will eventually die if given a fatal blow. There's nothing odd about that but it still needs to be sad because of his whole hey-I-was-shot-but-still-going-to-save-everyone thing.
There's also the guard he puts up around himself to detach himself from the rest of the world. Constantly dwelling on the fact he's a clone, he never really has bonded with others save for Gota and Marika (to an extent). It keeps him distant but also keeps him alone. He's an observer, just content to watch and stay in the background and while that's not necessarily a weakness, it does explain some of his weaknesses.
He's also jealous of people who do have lives and their own "chair" and while not a fatalist he is quite depressing in that he knows eventually, he will have to die. Also he assumes he isn't worth much anyway which leads to a dangerous attitude towards life. He doesn't have anything driving him to sacrifice his life before he met Marika -- yes, he had Gota but he was looking more for a way out of killing each other with that relationship -- but when he does find something to sacrifice himself for... he will do his best to accomplish it if it'll make the person he's doing it for happy.
So, to sum it up: strengths are his physical strength and mental strength. While still being a human, he's a bit higher on the scale than a normal human in terms on self preservation. Weaknesses are the fact that when he does become close to a someone, he will use all his mental and physical strength to help that person out. Though despite that, he doesn't get close to many people at all. For him, it was just him and Gota. Gota, his only friend, his only hero. Marika came in the picture and he fell in love with her but knew she belonged to Masamune. So he did his best to ... kind of... strengthen that love for Masamune inside of her, so she wouldn't be caught up in the life or death living of the clones.
It's kind of confusing but the simplest way I can say it is: he doesn't like anyone, but when he does like someone he will do anything for them. Truly anything.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Everybody's jealous of a Clone Baby party because a Clone Baby party just don't stop.
[ Sample ] :
A change in setting, while never really avoided, was not very appreciated at this moment in time. Hiro knew that he had a job to do-- whatever that happened to be-- and to be in some... underwater prison wasn't exactly the greatest of choices right now. Nevertheless, he couldn't do anything about it, could he? What did that person say-- they were trapped with no way out. Just like fish in a puddle, really. Yet, this didn't completely throw Hiro off. He would... adapt. Adapt until he was able to leave and go back to his world where he was-- needed? No no, not needed. Just... used. Used like a tool in a box.
After all, tools don't get chairs. That's just silly.
He wouldn't let the jarring knowledge that he was in a completely different dimension deter him though. Just putting on a smile, he approached the nearest person and began to play his role. Rubbing the back of his neck, he looked a bit sheepish as he asked about the place.
"Ah, I don't mean to intrude but-- Vatheon, is it? And no way home?"
When the person assured him that no, there really wasn't would he like a towel how bout some coffee, Hiro let out a sigh and did his best to not let it affect his outward appearance. Yet later, he would wonder what exactly this meant. Gota was alone now, wasn't he? His best friend-- it's been the first time they've ever been apart and now... now what was he going to do? He wasn't entirely sure he was ready for this but... he had to be, didn't he? After all, he had to get back and fight for his chair didn't he? The best he could do right now is wait and observe.
