Character name: Axel
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Age: Hell if I know. Maybe in his late twenties? If Ventus and Lea are the same age, and BBS is ten years before KH thennnn uh, twenties? Late twenties though.
Appearance:
Here!Canon point: Post-CoM, Pre-Day 71 (358/2 Days), so when he's looking for the Room of Waking in Castle Oblivion after eliminating everyone in Castle Oblivion, basically.
Cause of Death:
Abilities:
Blah blah blah, battle stats and other silly things. Along with being a strong fighter and being able to wield fire and his chakrams -- he can travel through portals of darkness, just like other Nobodies, and the black coat that he wears protects his heart from becoming even more taken over by darkness while traveling through the portals.
Background:
Here is his Nobody wiki article,
here is his Somebody wiki article, and here is my own little spin on his history.
Once upon a time there was a world in which Radiant Garden stood. Radiant Garden was pretty damn radiant and full of radiant people and radiant flowers and all kinds of radiant junk. In Radiant Garden, if one hung around enough, you'd run into two troublemakers: Isa and Lea. Now, Isa wasn't very troublemaker-y but Lea definitely was. The two were best friends through thick and thin and even though Lea complained and was loud and told everyone to memorize useless crap, Isa stuck by him.
It was very cute and bromantic and wooooo friendship, yeah!
Anyway, sometime during their wandering about Radiant Garden, Isa and Lea met Ventus, who was walking around with this weird metal thing on his shoulder and a wooden keyblade which of course, meant he was a dork and that Lea should beat him up. (Lea is not the brightest, you see.)
So, Lea challenged Ventus to a friendly match because haha my frisbees can beat you up suckerrrr even though dude, seriously, who the hell fights with a frisbee, let alone two? Lea got his ass whooped (woo!) but then whined and made excuses for his loss (boo!). Isa, who was standing nearby, was like dude you lost 'cause you suck, lol. And more complaining but that was perfectly fine because oh hey Ventus got Lea memorized and now he would live on forever in Ventus' memory, yay backwards immortality!
Enough about Lea though, let's get on to Axel.
During the course of Lea's life, somehow, someway, his heart was taken over by darkness (probably because of his need to be MEMORIZED BY EVERYONE AND ANYONE HURGH BLURGH) and died. Sort of. Well, you see, he became a Nobody and a Heartless. Heartless are little monsters that run around and eat people's hearts. Nom nom! A Nobody though is a person who has no heart. It's like a replica of the person, somewhat, and that replica can talk and act and pretend to have emotions all they want but in the end they are void of emotion and are just jerks. Big fat meaniehead jerks.
Anyway, Lea and Isa become one of them! He joins Organization XIII and haha, these guys are so witty -- they add an 'x' to their original names, the X being well... nothing! A symbol for nothing. Probably also has to do with the χ-blade Master Xehanort was so fascinated with (creeeeppppyyy dude he is). So Axel is an anagram of Lea + X and Saix is an anagram of Isa + X. Got it memorized? Good! Let's move on.
So, Lea becomes Axel who becomes Assassin Axel, Mister Flurry of Dancing Flames himself. He acquires the skill to wield fire and throw chakrams at people and travel through darkness portals all badass like. It's kind of rad, you see?
He becomes part of the (Dis)Organization XIII and doesn't do much of anything, because hell if I know what canon has to say about this. Cue Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days where Axel is just wandering around and oh hey look we have a thirteenth member, whatever dude wait WHAT you want me to do WHAT and suddenly, Axel has to get off his ass and teach Roxas how to be a Nobody just as much as he is! Yaaaayy nobodies.
So, Axel takes him on a mission and comments about how much of a zombie Roxas is. This little dude just cannot even form a sentence, man, how sucky is that? Afterwards though, Axel decides to treat Roxas to ice cream because if anything can make a zombie not be a zombie, it has to be ice cream. Right? RIGHT? Sea-salt ice cream at that! Nom nom salty sweet flavor. Cue 358 days of eating sea-salt ice cream together on the top of a clock tower that meant death to anyone who fell off. (Did I ever mention how these KH kiddies like to sit on IMPENDING DOOM places? Tree hanging off an island, top of a clock tower, giant hill floating in the middle of the sky, yeah!)
Alright so lots of what happens in Days is just sea-salt ice cream and bromance between Axel, Roxas, and Xion. BUT! I am not taking Axel from the end of Days, I am taking him from the end of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories which has a whole lotta Axel in a whole lotta devious badassery! It's also set in the middle of Days beginning around Day 22 and ending around Day 71.
In Castle Oblivion, Axel is pretty much going about his orders (which, originally the orders are from Saix to deal with Mister Flowers and Treachery himself, Marluxia!) but soon turns into this battle to end all battles (but not really). Axel ends up offing Vexen with a snap of his fingers (it was totally badass, I kid you not) and Zexion too -- but through the Riku Replica -- and then he kind of gets Sora to kill the other traitorous members too until hey, everyone in Castle Oblivion except for him is dead! HAHA, LOSERS!
Anyway, where I take him from is when he "slacks off" on RTC'ing (return to castle) and looks for the Room of Waking in Castle Oblivion. This is actually because of orders given to him by Xemnas and Saix because oh maaaann they want to find the Room of Waking in Castle Oblivion SO BAD.
... But of course they can't for other PLOT RELATED REASONS that have nothing to do with Axel oh ho ho. (Watch, third game comes out and suddenly OH HEY AXEL IS IN THE SHIT OF IT!)
Personality:
Axel's personality changes drastically between different canon points, I'll talk a bit about both here but it should be noted that he'll have have one "side" of him at Death Dealed unless I canon update him. The side of him that he'll be having in Death Dealed is one not completely changed by Roxas yet -- he's a Nobody through and through, a cold and calm demeanor is presented to everyone as he Gets The Job Done.
He is cruel at times, even, shown especially in Chain of Memories when Vexen is pleading for his life but Axel cuts him off with a quick "Goodbye" and snaps his fingers, burning Vexen alive. Yeah. He dislikes traitors and holds the orders given to him by Xemnas and Saix as the end all, be all. He's given orders to take out the traitors? Well, then he will. Even if the traitor was his friend. He used this against Marluxia at one point, who earlier told him to get rid of the traitors and when it was revealed Marluxia himself was one -- Axel attempted to kill him. Attempted being the word because Marluxia used Namine as a shield which in turn pissed off Sora and we all know what happens when the heroes get in the way.
Nevertheless, Axel is definitely cold and calculating. He's a bad guy. When he's sent to Castle Oblivion, Saix asks him to take care of the "problem" they were having with Marluxia and Larxene -- two members who were planning to rebel. The other three, Zexion, Vexen, and Lexaeus, were just sent to get them out of the way. (Surprisingly though, Saix does straight out tell Axel to kill Zexion.) Yet, being Nobodies, none of them trusted each other. Axel manipulated and used this trust to get them to destroy each other. Using Sora, Riku, and their own selfish wants, Axel ends up being the only one left when the Castle Oblivion mission is over -- the whole team he was sent with, dead. Marluxia, Larxene, Zexion, Vexen, and Lexaeus -- all gone, because of Axel.
Yet... on the flip side... Axel is a bit different than other Nobodies -- the reason for this hasn't been explained in canon yet but... he can feel emotions too. Not to an extreme level as a Somebody can but at one point in Chain of Memories, he started to laugh. Stopping himself, he remarked "Hey, wait... I'm enjoying this. You guys are something else!" It was weird for him to feel it but it's shown -- especially later on in Kingdom Hearts II when he's talking to Sora as he dies -- Roxas was the key to this. For some reason, being around Roxas made him feel like he had a heart. Being around Roxas made him feel whole again -- like he was a Somebody. Which, I believe that Axel really wants to be a Somebody again. The way he desperately clung to the hope of Roxas being his friend and staying his friend forever even when Roxas lost his memories of being a Nobody -- it shows that he really wishes to feel again.
In KHII, Roxas -- the guy who Axel spent the better part of a year hanging out with and eating sea-salt ice cream together on top of a clock tower with, the guy who became his best friend especially since well... he didn't have one. Saix, previously Isa, and Axel had fallen out (the reason for this is unknown but might possibly be because of moral differences -- ie, Saix becoming more "Evil" and Axel becoming more "Good") and Axel probably spent most of his time alone before Roxas came around. So yes, Roxas, this guy who Axel feels most connected to, forgets who he is. Roxas had left the Organization -- disobeyed them and left Axel alone once again. Roxas was sick of being a Nobody, he wanted to know who he really was -- who Sora was because with the hints surrounding him about Sora and his connection to Roxas, the poor kid was furious. Roxas is Sora's Nobody. Roxas needed answers and the Organization wasn't giving them to him, so he left.
There was also the fact Xion, his other best friend, had been sort of kind of killed but not. It's weird! She's part of the whole Kairi-Namine-Xion triangle and wasn't supposed to be. She was created by the Organization as a back up Roxas so is kind of... created by Sora's memories? Sort of? AGAIN, WEIRD. Nothing to do with Axel aside from the fact that when she finally disappeared, he didn't remember her at all. Completely and utterly forgotten, it's sad.
Which, again, left Axel all alone. To pour salt in the wound though, Axel was then given the orders to take Roxas out. Since, well, Axel was the Organization's assassin -- he took out the traitors. So, in the prologue of KHII, you have Axel popping up and trying to kill Roxas -- who fights him off, while still dealing with trying to recover his memories of being a Nobody -- which... understandably, fucked up Axel. Here he is, confused and lonely, no friends, these weird... emotions that he hadn't felt in so long, and orders to take out his ex-best friend.
It sucked.
Which is why I'm not taking him from this point! I just needed to describe that yes, Axel is different. He can feel emotions. When he returned from Castle Oblivion -- he felt jealousy when he realized Roxas and Xion were hanging out without him. When Roxas told him that nobody would miss him when he left, he said that he would. When he was given orders to take out Roxas since he was a traitor, he obviously felt horrible about it.
So yes, Axel can... supposedly, feel, but only around Roxas. For now, at this canon point, he hasn't been around Roxas enough to really understand what these returning things called "emotions" are.
