Just another HS story- Chapter 4
-CHAPTER 4-
When class ended, I automatically tagged along with Junsu (whom I finally noticed, was in my class all this time) in order to find Changmin. When we found him, we headed out. I braced myself for what was about to happen.
As soon as we exited the school building, I looked around from behind my long bangs to spot the bullies, but they weren’t in sight yet. Strange, the note I got in class clearly said that I was going to die.
But when we exited school grounds, I knew that I was going to get trouble anyways when I heard the bully’s voice calling me. The three of us turned around.
“Kim Jaejoong! I thought that we were clear that you aren’t allowed to look at my girl with those disgusting eyes of yours” he spat. What-the-hell, can he even see my eyes to say that they are disgusting?
“But she was the one who came and talked to me…” I said simply and innocently.
The bully looked confused for a second and then suddenly, as if something has clicked in his head, he looked at me and laughed.
“What? That ugly monkey? She’s not my girl. I’m talking about Euna you retard!” he said, that irrational anger back in his voice.
“Who’s Euna…?” I whispered to Junsu who seemed confused by the whole situation.
“She’s the prettiest girl in our class. You know, the one who’s sitting very close to you” Junsu whispered back.
Suddenly, it was all clear. That was the girl he was talking about! The one I was staring at this morning!
“Oh…sorry… I thought that…” I started to try to present a fake apology.
“You thought that? That’s not good enough now. You’re dead, Kim Jaejoong” the bully said as he advanced towards me. I was braced to fight, when a tall figure stood in front of me.
“Don’t you dare touch him” Changmin said with strength he has never shown before. He sounded confident and not at all scared. The bully stopped on his track.
“Don’t mess with my business!” the bully yelled.
“No. You do not mess with him. He’s my friend, you got that?” Changmin said as he took a step forwards. The bullies backed away. Changmin took another step and the bullies retreated. The fact that Changmin defended me because I was his “friend” really made me soft hearted for a second. He reminded me of the big friendly dog I had back home.
“Wow” I said looking up at him. He was smiling now, as if nothing happened. “They’re really all scared of you? Are you really that scary?”
“Our Changminie might be really goofy on a regular basis, but if you mess with his friends, he can be pretty scary. His family might not be so rich, but really has a way of making things turn to his advantage” Junsu said “but… what was that all about?” he said, looking at me intently.
“Um… I’m not sure. That guy hated me from the very first day I got here” I said “something about that girl, Euna, I think…”
“Ah, figures. She’s so pretty that every guy wants to date her. I bet you’d like that too right?” Junsu said, elbowing and winking at me at the same time.
“No, not really…” I said. It was sort of an automatic reply, but it seemed to have shocked them how I said it in such a nonchalant tone. There was an awkward silence.
Silence. Silence and more silence. Then…
“Hurrai! Join the club!” Junsu said holding up his hands up for a double high-five. I sighed in relief as I gave Junsu his double high-fives.
“Guy…” Changmin said in a very serious tone. We both looked at him warily. Maybe he’s into that girl…?
Suspense…then…
“I’m hungry” he said, almost pouting. For the second time today, I felt like petting him. Actually, I’m pretty sure I want to adopt him by now.

After eating at the buffet, we went to the arcade where Junsu and Changmin destroyed me at every video game. It was mostly competition between the two of them.
“Ok, what do we do now?” Junsu said, still hyper even after two hours of intense video gaming.
“Well… I don’t know…” I said, shrugging.
“Can we go buy some ice cream?” Changmin asked. How predictable.
“Yeah sure” I said and we started walking towards the ice cream booth of the mall. After we got our ice cream, we sat down on a bench somewhere.
“So Jaejoong um… how do you like the school so far?” Junsu asked, probably not knowing what else to say.
“Honestly?” I asked him, raising an eyebrow that he can’t see.
“Yeah” he said, licking his ice cream at the same time.
“Well, other than having you two as friends, the rest kinda sucks” I said.
“How come?”
“Probably because I got bullied on the very first day and now I know that he probably won’t leave me alone for the rest of the school year at least” I said in a tired voice. Just thinking about dealing with that bully everyday made me tired.
“You don’t sound very scared” Junsu said, crooking his mouth which had some ice cream on it.
“Nah, I’m not scared, just lazy. I mean, wouldn’t you get tired if you had to deal with him everyday?” I said with a sigh.
“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you!” Changmin said, raising his spoon up like a sword. (Changmin was the only one who got a super large sundae while we got regular scoops)
I laughed at Changmin even though I knew he could probably do what he said.
“Haha, I’ll be counting on you then” I said with a smile that he probably couldn’t see. (Yes, my hair was that long. And emo since it’s black and straight)
“Mmm!” he said either in agreement or because his ice cream was good. I couldn’t tell.
“Yeah, and I’ll stick around too” Junsu said, very jumpy on his seat.
We sat there and ate our ice cream without words for a while.
“Hey guys, I have something to confess” I said, biting my lips.
“Yea? Oh, lemme guess, you like Euna don’t you? Hahaha! I knew it!” Junsu exclaimed even more jumpy than before.
“No, that’s not it…”
Junsu shut up.
“I want to confess that I sort of used you guys at the beginning. You see, I wanted you guys to be my friends just so that the bully would leave me alone and actually, I brought the second lunch for Changmin just to sort of buy his friendship” I said with a little bit of shame and I was glad that I had all that hair to hide behind at that moment.
There was some silence.
“Mm… what about that first day then?” Changmin asked.
“What first day?” I said, confused.
“When you gave me your lunch and only had an apple to eat” he said, looking at me with big eyes.
“Uh… that was… well, I don’t know…” I said. I really didn’t know what made me give him my lunch, really.
“Well” Junsu suddenly cut in “if you used us, I’m sure glad you did, it was really fun today” he said with a cheeky smile, licking off some ice cream on his lips. (Awww)
We laughed.
At that moment, I realized that whoever was the one who said that friendship couldn’t be bought with money, was right.
