I view my "pets" as companions, too. They're part of the family to most people, and it is just as traumatic (and perhaps moreso) than when others in our lives lift the veil and pass into the What Is to Come.
Mina seemed like an awesome cat, I'm sorry I'll never get to meet her.
The animals I share my home with are companions, too. In the past year, I had to say goodbye to the 2 "vicious" hamsters my husband and I had rescued, and that was difficult as such things are. Yet, we may have not been able to rescue a small aquatic turtle recently if the hammies were still there, so I try to appreciate the cycle of life--which isn't always easy. I am especially close with Nick, the cat who rescued us, and I can only imagine the what I will feel when his time comes. My thoughts are with you!
Meow (pronounced "mao") wasn't really that comfortable in the last months of her life. She couldn't do all the things she was accustomed to doing, like leaping up onto the couch to be with her mom. (even when she made she couldn't stay because, you know...)
Since Meow, like most cats, love their routines, this was hard to watch.
If nothing else, I'm grateful that she doesn't have to suffer through the arthritis, diabetes, etc any more. That, and that her mom was with her before she let go.

Thank you for your kind thoughts, as always.
