I've never been to Camden and don't know anything about the neighborhood surrounding the campus, but in generally it's not the safest of cities. It's consistently ranked as having one of the highest crime rates in the US, and (at least in the northeast) it has a pretty bad reputation. That said, the campus may well be in a nicer pocket; hopefully someone with better information will be able to help you out with that!

I would not consider living in Camden. But it all depends on your comfort level.

Living in NJ I know that Camden has a horrible reputation. That being said there are plenty of areas outside of Camden where you could live and simply drive or take the bus into school daily.

The short answer No Camden isn't safe.

I taught voc outside Camden had no problems. Depends entirely on you but if you are concerned, I'd suggest visiting for a weekend to get a feel for it.

Your mileage may vary, but I personally would not want to live in Camden.

I've only been there a few times (and to relatively nicer parts like the aquarium and the Tweeter Center), but I've heard more than my fair share of horror stories about the area.

Safe? God no. I consider myself lucky to have not been stabbed while living in Philly.

And the commute to Camden is a bitch.

Even with money to upgrade neighborhoods, safety will be an issue unless you were raised in a place like NYC, Chicago or Detroit.
