So... I had my first teaching interview on Friday afternoon. First time I've interviewed for a teaching position, first time I've been interviewed by a panel (4 people this time ( Read more... )

I'm sorry that your interview didn't go well. It's always an awful feeling when that happens. I've fucked up more than one job interview, and I KNOW that I had a really good chance of getting the job at one of them because it was the second interview I fucked up at. It's good that you are doing the follow-up stuff because it shows that you are serious about wanting the position. I have been on more interviews than I can count at this point (there have been spurts when I had been going on 2 or 3 per week on average). Some of them I left having a good feeling about, some I left thinking I had completely screwed it up. I have found that my gut feeling has usually been pretty good about this kind of thing, but not always. I attempted to learn from every single interview I have been on. If you can actually take something away from this interview and learn from your mistake/experience that is a very valuable thing and will make you ten times more prepared the next time. I know that probably doesn't help at all right now, since you ( ... )

That's really tough. I'm sorry to hear it didn't go very well. Have you considered getting in touch with at least the teacher you had that was part of the panel to tell your story? What I'm suggesting is being open and honest, not begging for the position in any way at all. It may help you for them to know how much the position means to you. Who knows, maybe they'd be willing to give you another interview. They very well may not, but it doesn't hurt and it may make you feel a bit better to have them know your heart.

I know how hard it is to really want something, and then feel like you have only yourself to blame for not getting it. It really sucks, but try not to be too tough on yourself. There is always something good to be taken from even a bad situation. You are a good man and good things will happen for you if you keep true to yourself.

Oh, I'm sorry. I'll cross my fingers and hope that the 4 others are either really underqualified or bomb the interview as well.

And cross my fingers hoping that you didn't do as bad as you think you did.

If this one doesn't work out... don't give up on your dream. You can get a teaching position, and you'll be great at it.

I know how you feel. Back when I was still trying to get a job in the bio field, I interviewed at several places, but I never had the feeling that I did really well.

But if teaching is really what you want to do, keep trying! I know, there might never be a job that you want quite as much as this one, or be just as perfect, but try somewhere else, and keep going. And, as Jason suggested, call that teacher you admire and explain. It certainly wouldn't hurt.

*fingers crossed*
