My sister and I do tons of stuff in the crock pot. You can do beans, any kind of soups, roasts, we've made chili in it, we've made pasta sauce in it... I don't really have recipes, though. We just toss things in it, put it on low, and look to it in 8 hours or so. I am sure you can search the net for specific recipes. Some of THOSE recipes specify brands -- I ignore that.

Good luck in your search for recipes. And good luck to your Mom. I had a hysterectomy 7 years ago and it was very painful.

If it's a large crock (6 quart), you can actually put a small (thawed, not frozen) turkey breast in there and cook it. You use pretty much the same recipe as if you were roasting it in the oven, but cook on low for 8 hours/overnight. That's yummy, and you can then use the leftovers for making soup!

Oooh, good call! We have a variety of sizes (not that I'm crockpot-obsessed.....). Our 5qt would probably be perfect. Thanks!

Fair warning-You may have to split the breast or trim off the narrow edges to get it to fit; I BARELY got a 5 pound breast to fit in one piece in my 6qt pot. And I had to sort of lay it on its side to get it to fit! But it tasted GREAT.

Do you put anything else in with the turkey? Or just plunk the piece of raw meat in there all by itself? And I'm assuming you weren't referring to those boneless turkey breasts? So the same should work with a whole chicken (with bones)?

I just don't know why I've never thought of this! Thank you for the tip!

I'm not hitting you with recipes, per se, but I'm pointing to a really good source for them.

Allrecipes.com has a ton of crockpot recipes and almost all of them have a nutritional analysis at the bottom of the recipe.

Granted, you will find a lot that have canned soups, but you find just as many that don't, and I've gotten a lot of good, healthy crock pot recipes from them.

Best wishes to your family at this time.

oops I posted a link but it came up as spam..

I make a great Slow-Cooker Vegetarian Chili With Sweet Potatoes (the recipe can be found on RealSimple and other places!!) that can be made with meat if need be

I leave out the cumin and chiili powder, my husband's not keen on spices (so boring!)

hats so nice you're taking care of your mom like this ... good karma your way!! <3

You can also make a big roast, with a couple of meals worth of veggies (leftovers are so handy!), then cut the rest of the roast into bite-size pieces, put it back in with some broth, and make beef vegetable soup ( ... )

This makes a pretty basic filling for tacos. Not really spicy or anything (well, I omit the cayenne, so yeah). Probably also good with rice and beans.

This is my fave slow cooker pasta sauce recipe. Smells amazing while it's cooking.
