Eugene's gone.

Snafu's pretending not care because he's not supposed to care, not really--he'd made his mind up on the train that it was ending there, that he'd walk away and let that part of his life go just so he could survive the next one.

This isn't so different. It's a few months of consequences for his disappearing act turned into some kind ( Read more... )

Zelda hadn't seen Eugene or Merriell for a few days and she usually saw one or the other before now. It was cause to worry, especially given that Juliet and Lucifer had disappeared not that long ago. She wasn't entirely comfortable with inviting herself to their home if only because Merriell's moods were quixotic at best but she did this day, wanting to at least know they were there. If she was laughed at, so be it.

Merriell was smoking when she turned up and Zelda let out a little sigh of relief.

"I thought perhaps you might have disappeared. Is something wrong?"

"Yeah," he says, slow through a thin smile because yeah, she would show up. She would think that, and be just right enough to make his stomach turn over. "Still here." The cigarette dangles from his lips and sends smoke dancing up his skin, into his hair and it's a dull hard sound when his head drops back against the wood.

"Come sit with me," he offers after a stretch of silence, not even looking at her but his whole body folds in to his half of the doorway, and they're both of them small enough to share the space. Maybe not comfortably, but comfortable isn't something he cares about.

It took her a moment but Zelda sat, hip pressed against Merriell's but the rest of her body not touching his. The cigarette smoke still lingered in the air between them and it was comforting, in an odd way.

"I'm glad," she said after a few moments of silence, turning to face him. "What's wrong, exactly?"

Raising his hand, he puts the cigarette out against the door's frame and turns to her, his movements nervy and he feels a little drunk on too little sleep. Moments grind one into the next and he's just trying to slide through them without--

without losing anything else, somehow. "I need a shower," he mutters, blinking at her and it takes a minute, it catches up to him that he's apologizing for something, the dirt under his nails and the smoke and sweat on his skin as he leans into her just, just enough. Her hair smells nice and folds nice and that's what he's got right now.

"Eugene's not here anymore," he says. It's not wrong, he thinks, it just is.
