DC THINGS TO DO???

Hey, chums who live in the DC area (Nnaylime I know -- not sure who else),

My boy Maxx is taking his 8th grade trip to Washington DC on Monday.

If the shut-down happens, they are looking for things to do (they are there for 5 days) that are low-cost or no-cost that won't be affected by the shut down.

There are 21 kids plus 3 chaperones.

Any

The Smithsonian. All of it. That alone will take 2-3 days to properly see, but 8th graders will be most interested in the Air & Space Museum, Natural History and American History. The National Zoo is run by the Smithsonian also. International Spy Museum in Chinatown (fee to get in). Other than that...yeah, you're kinda screwed if the shutdown happens.

The National Mall is two miles from end to end (Lincoln to Capitol), so that alone will be a whole day of monument watching without having to actually go inside them.

Huh. The people at NPR got it wrong then. They said traffic at the Smithsonian would increase if there was a shutdown. Lies.

Last I heard the Supreme Court will be continuing normal operations. It's usually open to the public but you need to pass through security. The only glitch could be how long the security line will take if they are understaffed ...

Oh and the docents that do the lectures might not be there?

Scratch that last part. The docents are volunteers.
