I was rummaging through some old computer files when I came across this. It's a user-review of Hotel Rwanda I submitted to Netflix, that needless to say, was never published. I was ticked off about this for awhile, figuring they snubbed me because it wasn't cool to expose such a beloved film and dis on it for how trite it really is, for not ( Read more... )

unless the movie (which i've never heard of) claims that it was a serious movie about those tragedies, they probably just assumed the points you made were irrelevant to a movie that was trying to convey something else entirely.

Yes, it was sold as a serious film about those premises. The hype it generated, including 100% of the reviews NetFlix deemed fit for publishing, was all in the same vein. To believe what you were told, this film was to shock and appaul you in 1 million different ways, to question your belief in the very core of mankind, and to make you stand up and say "never again".

I thought it fell flat on all of those goals because it was given too safe of a treatment. Complete Hollywood schlock that, in my opinion, didn't even come close to exposing the sheer brutatlity of what really happened over there. Someone who was unaware of what went on just 10 short years ago may have been moved by seeing this, but I've read articles from journalists, interview with ex-soldiers (now prisoners) who committed these atrocities, and so on, and I felt it didn't do enough to convey the utter horror these people lived in. They didn't like my opinion so they squelched it.
