Mayor Nutter, with a budget cut, in the library

The Free Library of Philadelphia is in danger of closing - or so sayeth the press release. All of the branches, all of the programs.

Now, before I go an get my reading glasses in a twist, the pragmatist in me knows this probably won't happen.  This is, more than likely, a risky but well-played gambit to get legislators to pay attention.  ( Read more... )

I completely agree about the smell of libraries. And, absurdly, libraries have a distinct sound, too. I love that sound. The sound of quiet but not inactivity. Delicious!

This is sad news, and I hope you're right about the odds.

Or the only place left to go for learning will be the Atwater Kent museum!
