Eurovision - Short commentary - 1st Semi-Final.

Apr 01, 2011 23:30

Well, let's put it like this: Most of my favorites are in the second Semi-Finals. The ones that I like the most out of these are probably Greece, Georgia, Malta and Iceland. My least favorite ones are probably Russia and Albania.

This is just a list of thoughts and commentary on each song that will be in the first Semi-finals.

Poland - Magdalena Tul: Jestem
NOT ENGLISH this is big big bonus in my book. Dramatic yet upbeat, you just want to get on the dancefloor. I really like this kind of music with very hard beats, certainly the exact opposite of last year's entry.

Norway - Stella Mwangi: Haba Haba
well, this is certainly a surprise. Norway trying to show that they are a multicultural society, is the first thought when you see them, but the second is... Remember "Waka Waka" by Shakira? You couldn't stop thinking about it. Not to say that the song is bad; it is nice to listen to, mostly English with a few other words (title!) and makes you want to dance at the beach. Not really something you'd expect from Norway, but interesting.

Albania - Aurela Gace: Feel the Passion
Sug, your dress is really distracting. And your English is hardly understandable. Dramatic, sounds a bit like Within Temptation. I would probably have liked it a lot better if it wasn't in English.

Armenia - Emmy: Boom Boom
A lot less instrumental support than in the other entries. Not very deep meanings, but it's just fun. Lots of fun to listen to it. And you want to clap your hands and and just jump into the air in the right rythm and in general get moving.

Turkey - Yüksek Sadakat: Live It Up
Turkey, your video is distracting, but so very FUNNY. The song is not that different from last year's, it actually sounds a bit like someone tries to take last year and make it work this time, but since I really liked the last song? Yes, this is cool. About as much Hard Rock/Metal as you can get into Eurovision.

Serbia - Nina: Corban
Not English, relatively tame... I will just. NOT comment on the video. Someone seems to have done some time travelling. It's not a borning song, but it's not very special, either. Nothing that I would remember for being either very good or very bad.

Russia - Alexey Vorobyov: Get You
I really don't like this song. It sounds very dull, he doesn't really hit some of the notes right, and some of the words are hard against the beat.

Switzerland - Anna Rossinelli: In love for a while
Calm, but no ballad. Rather traditional instrumentation, which fits perfectly. it makes you think of happy summer day's road movies. Very light and easy to listen to.

Georgia - Eldrine: One More Day
Dramatic singing and a hip-hop-y male second lead... All in all this is very reminiscent of Evanescence. Starts a bit slow, but it gets better and better the longer it lasts.

Finland - Paradise Oskar: Da Da Dam
Okay so here we got a ballad. After last year's disaster, they apparently decided to send an English entry this year. With guitar on the site, which is kind of to be expected from a ballad of this kind, but it gives a nice feeling. "Save the planet~"

Malta - Glen Vella: One Life
wait, is this seriously a guy singing there? It sounds VERY female. Very upbeat, makes you want to jump and dance with the people in the video.

San Marino - Senit: Stand By
Dramatic ballad, full instrumental. It's nice, very Italian, very emotional.

Croatia - Daria - Celebrate
Dear Croatia. You want this song to be the inofficial hymn for your joining of the EU. WHY DO YOU HAVE SPARSELY CLAD WOMEN DANCING IN RED LIGHT IN IT? I AN ENVIROMENT THAT LOOKS LIKE A RUNDOWN BACKSTREET, EVEN MORE?
Aside fromt aht, it's a dance song, upbeat. The title is all that it is really about. Fun music.

Iceland - Sjonni's Friends: Coming Home
This is something for the heart. Really, the title says it all. It is exactly the kind of song that you would except it to be, and I must say, it makes me teary eyed. For real, which very few songs manage to do.

Hungary - Kati Wolf: What About My Dreams
This has fire. A mix of English and Hungarian, which makes the repeated parts still sound interesting. Disco, well performed.

Portugal - Homens da Luta: Luta É Alegría
...Good luck, guys. Comedic entries are only so much fun when you don't understand the language. There is no dancing, they don't sing like a choir, more like a group of hobby singers around a campfire. I actually don't dislike it at all, but against all the professional entries that the other nations send, I seriously doubt that they have a choice. If they don't get disqualified anyway because of political lyrics.

Lithuania - Evelina Sašenko: C'est Ma Vie
A very headstrong ballad, a voice that shows a lot of "body"... a song that is mostly English and a little bit French. It's fascinating, and a nice ballad that manages to keep the listener's attention the whole way through.

Azerbaijan - Ell/Nikki: Running Scared
I see why people call it one of this year's favorites. It has fire, stays in your head even after you heard it. Calmer than a lot of other entries, but not calm at all. Something for a nightly drive home.

Greece - Loucas Yiorkas feat. Stereo Mike - Watch My Dance
Two singers: Hip Hop meets traditional. English meets Greek. It's a surprising mix, but very well done. The Greek part is emotional and the hip hop part a perfect counterpart. You get the feeling of modern pessimism against traditional weltschmerz. It's wonderful. I hope to see them in the finals, and really kind of expect it.
