My dream of going to NY this Christmas break is looking more and more bleak ever day. I looked into taking the train but it's really not going to work out so well. It's still cheaper to drive and pay $35 a day for private parking

Now you're talking about taking a train from Michigan?
You could drive out to suburbs of NYC, as I did, and park (even stay in a cheap motel) far out from the city. Then take an hour train into grand central, buy a day pass for the subways, and you've got yourself a cheap hotel, 7 buck day pass, and a 15-20 dollar train ticket. I spent 20 on a round trip on the train, but it was a 2.5 hour ride up north to the furthest stop on the tracks. Can't remember the name of the stop, but it was desolate and the hotels looked very inexpensive.
Do some research. It is possible to do NYC cheap. I even got to see the whole city in one night (with the aide of a resident who lived there for 23 years).
I think I'm just going to go next year so I have time to plan everything out. I have too much crap to do right now with finals and such. Thanks for the input though, I will definitely keep it in mind. :)
