I think the silent "r" is stupid and after a quick dictionary.com search I found out that Chaucer, who used the spelling in this title in lieu of "to surprise", shared my distaste. Thats a good point. I think the "r" being pronounced is stupid too though. Its just doesn't feel natural to say.
