Interesting what a little "me" time will do for you.

I was raised very kindly by a minister's family. They were good Christians, and helped to make me a good man. I have...a high number of aunts and cousins, and we had a Shetland pony when I was a lad.

Most kids would kill for a dog.

Did you like it? The lifestyle, that is. Not the Shetland pony.

He was for the plowing.

Yes? We weren't well off, but we never went hungry.

Do you think all inmates are bad people?

I think the inmates are here because they've made mistakes.

Do you think you're a bad person?

No, I don't think I'm a bad person.

But I've certainly made mistakes.

Who hasn't though? Show me a Warden who hasn't buggered something up.

Some of the wardens may well end up here again one day as inmates. Even me.

I came up in Harlem, with all the implications that includes, though I had it better than most kids for a while. I had both parents in my life until my mother died. I can say that, without a doubt, it affected the man I grew up to be.

Living in a single-family home - particularly with a deceased parent, rather than an absent one - is definitely immensely different from the gold standard.

It's easier to get in trouble, for example.

That's true, though I'm not gonna lie...I was gonna be getting into trouble either way.

That's just how it was.

Is.

Can former Inmates answer that question?

Of course.

I don't think my childhood helped. But it's not to blame.

If your childhood had been different, would you have made the same choices that led to you being an inmate?

I won't say much about it. But it was normal enough.

How are you doing? I saw you had a rough time during that age thing.

It wasn't too bad, actually. Amanda spent a lot of time sitting on my lap, eating marshmallows and chatting with me.

I'm glad to hear that, at least. She still referring to you by name?

She is. I think I'm actually making good progress with her. She asked me to come to her room and didn't throw hydrogen peroxide in my eyes.

Leaps and bounds, Kay.
