“Sorry I couldn’t get you to work on time… this time,” Noah smiled over at Luke as he pulled his truck into a parking space behind the bookstore.
Luke looked down at his watch and shrugged before looking back up and returning Noah’s wide smile with one of his own. “It’s OK. It was kinda worth it!” The smile turned into a lust smirk at the memory of the hot and steamy after breakfast make-out session that meant they’d spent longer in Noah’s shower than either man had originally intended. They just couldn’t seem to keep their hands off each other.
The young blonde felt his cock twitch in his pants and swore he could still feel Noah’s fingers tugging on his hair as he’d knelt on the tiled shower floor; his mouth and tongue working expertly up and down the other man’s impressive length.
He shivered when he felt Noah’s hand snake over his thigh; the talented fingers squeezing in just the right place. “I could always come in and explain to your boss why you’re a little late,” he murmured, the rich baritone dropping to it’s seductive lowest.
Noah had meant the remark as an off-hand comment, intent only on good-naturedly teasing the younger man … wanting to see a blush of embarrassment spread across those handsome features. But the very second the last word was out of his mouth, Noah felt Luke freeze under his touch and a look of horror flash across his face.
Luke’s mouth went dry; the very thought of what Noah had suggested, if only in jest, horrified him… how could the other man be so off-hand about it? It was one thing for Noah’s mom to find them together and for the young man to be honest with her but this was something else completely.
“Luke, I’m sorry. I was only…” Noah began in confusion, trying to make amends.
Luke shook his head. “It’s OK. It’s just that I’m late and I should get going,” he deflected. But he knew that Noah had seen his reaction.
“Can I see you later?” Noah asked, his voice tinged with hurt.
“I can’t. I have to work and I really should do some studying later.” Luke couldn't meet the other man's gaze and he reached for the door handle. He felt a panic rising in his chest. The longer they sat in Noah’s truck here in the parking lot the more exposed the younger man felt… it was almost as if every single passer-by knew exactly what they had spent the night and early this morning doing to each other.
“Sunday then?” Noah persisted. He knew they should sit down and actually talk about what was going on here.
“I’ll call you,” Luke answered as he opened the door.
“OK,” Noah sighed, knowing it was the best answer he was going to get right now.
He leaned across the seat to kiss Luke goodbye.
The blonde saw the movement and turned his head quickly to check if anyone was around to see. Shit! What if word got back to his parents?!
Luke’s change of position meant that Noah’s lips brushed across the other man’s cheek instead of their intended target.
“Luke?” The handsome brunette pulled back, trying to look into those deep hazel orbs.
“I can’t…” came Luke’s anguished reply as he flung the door the rest of the way open and slid out of the truck.
Noah stretched across the seat. “Wait!” But the blonde had already closed the door and was striding across the parking lot.
For the second time in as many days, Noah watched Luke walking away from him toward the bookstore.
The dark-haired man screwed his eyes shut tight and thrust his head back against the seat. He'd seen the look on Luke's face before the other man had turned and fled; there was a mix of fear tinged with regret and apology, all fighting for dominance across the handsome features.
And Noah knew exactly what that meant. The blonde was perfectly OK being open if it was just the two of them or maybe even with Noah's mom now. But where the rest of the world was concerned… Luke Grimaldi was firmly in the closet.
“Fuck!” Noah groaned. Why couldn't life, just for once, not be so complicated?!…
….
“You're late, Grimaldi!” Wade barked at Luke as the young man slipped into the bookstore, hoping that the owner wouldn't see him. “If it happens again I'm afraid I'm going to have to let you go.” The guy’s tardy attitude was really starting to get to him. He’d only taken Luke on because he and the kid’s father both used the same accountant; you just never know when having a contact in the shipping business, even if it was second hand, might come in useful. But he could only take so much and he was running a business after all.
“I’m so sorry. I… I promise it won’t happen again,” Luke mumbled, unable to meet the older man’s stare. Not only could he not lose this job, he couldn’t look at Wade… not with Noah’s words still ringing in his ears.
He moved swiftly passed the bookstore owner and took his place next to Maddie at the counter. Saturday was the shop’s busiest day and today was no exception; customers were queuing at the counter and people were milling amongst the bookshelves… picking up books and leafing through the pages. At least being busy might help distract him from thinking about the handsome hunk of the garden centre owner.
“Luke.” Maddie risked a sideward glance at her friend. “Are you OK?”
The blonde nodded without looking at her.
Maddie gasped as she noticed that Luke was still wearing the same clothes that he’d had on last night and she could just make out the dark, tell-tale edges of a mouth shaped bruise that was peaking out from under the neckline of her friend’s T-shirt. “Oh my god, Luke!” she whispered urgently under her breath. “You slept with him and stayed the night with him, didn’t you?!” She wasn’t sure which shocked her more.
“Ssshhh,” Luke muttered back. “I can’t talk about it now!” He looked around desperately to see if Mr. Wade or any of the customers… anybody who might possibly have any connection to his family had overheard. “We'll talk later.”…
…
Maddie almost bodily pushed her best friend through the door into the store room the second they had an opportunity for a break. “So spill… and don't leave out any of the details!” she demanded as she rounded on him and rested both hands on her hips impatiently.
“Mads!” he sighed as he lent back against the door, not really sure where to begin.
The petite brunette hadn’t seen her friend so lost for words in a long time. “Luke? What is it?” She reached up and ran a soothing hand down his arm.
Luke pictured his and Noah's lovemaking and a shiver ran down his spine at the thought of how perfect it had been. There was no other word to describe it.
“No Luke, not like this… I want to see your face.”
He could almost feel Noah's whispered words in his ear.
“It was perfect, Maddie. It was just… I've never… it was like an out of body experience. He just seemed to know exactly what I needed… and where to touch me,” the blonde recounted in a murmur
“Wow!” Maddie replied. She had never seen her friend so affected in this way before. “And then what happened?”
Luke seemed lost in his own thoughts for a moment before replying. “Then?! Well… then his mom found us in the morning.”
“What?! Wait!” the woman’s eyes danced incredulously. “His mom found you in bed?!”
“Asleep but naked!” Luke’s head nodded up and down vigorously.
“I wished the ground would’ve opened up and swallowed me whole! But that wasn’t all! We had this long talk in the kitchen, just his mom and me. Mad’s… she is an amazing woman and so accepting of Noah.” His face crumpled and he could feel the tears beginning to build. Remembering that incredibly touching moment in the kitchen, where he had began to hope for his own future had only served to highlight just how scared… no… petrified he’d been out in the parking lot just now. When and how was he ever going to feel confident enough to be as open as Noah and to stop feeling like he was scared of his own shadow?
“Come on, Luke. You can have that too… someday,” Maddie tried to reassure him… to encourage him but she knew her friend’s situation better than anyone else and the words sounded empty even to her.
He pushed her arm away and viciously swiped at his eyes with the back of his hand.
“How can I, Maddie?! I couldn’t even let him kiss me out in the parking lot without completely freaking out and losing it,” he muttered, struggling to keep himself from yelling angrily. He was annoyed and disappointed in himself and furious with the world for putting him in this impossible situation. He couldn't imagine being able to face the handsome brunette again.
Maddie’s mouth opened and then closed again, struggling ineffectually to find the right comforting words. She wished she could give her friend the courage he needed to face his fears and Demons. But she couldn't. Maybe nobody could. Maybe it had to come from inside Luke himself… perhaps he had to want it enough…
…
Noah sat in the midst of the noise of the bar, hoping that the combination of the music and the beer would wash over him and make him numb. His usual Saturday night routine of catching up on the nursery’s paperwork and his research paper had done nothing to distract his thoughts from a certain handsome blonde.
Giving up with his feeble attempt at the paperwork, he’d called Max and suggested another drinking session at Metro. His friend was late as usual; Noah swore he did it on purpose so he wouldn’t have to get the first drinks in.
The brunette lifted his beer bottle and took a long and gratifying swig before setting it back on the counter; continuously moving it from one hand to the other while his long fingers teased the edge of the label.
The feel of the bottle in his hands brought memories of last night flooding back and Noah remembered just how right it had felt to hold Luke’s thick and hard cock in his hand, his strong and sure fingers working up and down the straining shaft as his thumb teased across the slit.
As their sweat slicked bodies had moved erotically against each other, it had felt so right… almost as if they were made to fit together perfectly.
It had been perfect. It was the best sex he’d had in a long time. Hell, it was the only sex he'd in a long time. But that didn't make it any less perfect.
But then it had all gone to hell in a hand basket. And now he couldn't get the blonde out of his mind.
“Noah!” Max cried out heartily, slapping Noah on his back as he dropped onto the seat next to his friend… startling the man out of his thoughts. “How's it hanging, man?! This is getting to be a habit. You wanna be careful; keep coming out like this and people will think you're getting a life. Or they'll start to think you and me are an item.” He chuckled loudly at his own joke as he playfully bumped Noah's shoulder.
Noah shook his head despairingly, chuckling back and rolling his eyes at his friend. But he knew that he could always count on the other man to make him smile. He reached out, picked up his bottle and drained it. “Just for that, you can buy the next round,” he retorted good-naturedly as he set the empty bottle back on the bar.
Surprised by his friend’s lack of response, Noah turned on his bar stool to face Max only to find him staring back at him; eyes studying him intently and his eyebrow raised questioningly.
“What?”
“Noah Mayer, don’t you ‘what’ me! You got yourself some last night, didn’t you?!” Max grinned widely and slapped Noah on the back again, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.
“I… how did…” the brunette began in shock. He was half tempted to look in the mirror against the back wall of the bar to see if he had it tattooed across his forehead.
Max laughed at the other man’s confused expression. “I haven’t been your best buddy for years without getting to know you inside out, dude. I probably know you better than your own mother!”
Noah had to chuckle at that. If only Max knew that his mom had found him and Luke in bed together this morning!
“So… spill. Who’s the guy?!” His friend looked around the bar as if he expected said guy to appear out of the woodwork.
“Luke…” Noah began then stopped, realising that Max wouldn’t know who he was talking about, “… the intern.”
“The intern?! The intern with the attitude?! He came back?”
“Well… obviously.”
“But I thought you couldn’t stand him… said he was some spoilt rich brat that had never had to work a day in his life?” his friend asked incredulously, ordering the beer all but forgotten.
“Believe me, no one was more surprised than I was!” Noah thought back to how Luke had launched at him from behind last night, spilling them both through his open doorway.
“So why are you here out drinking with me tonight instead of being with him doing whatever it is you guys do… and spare me the details?!” Max asked as he turned to order the drinks.
Noah waited for the bartender to place the drinks in front of him before smirking at his friend. “So you don't want to hear what an incredibly long and talented tongue he as and how he can….”
“Stop! Not listening… so not listening,” Max called out in a singsong voice as he stuck his fingers in his ears. “But seriously, where is he? He hasn't stood you up already, as he?”
Noah's smirk disappeared and he frowned. “It's complicated.”
The brunette took a deep breath and explained the whole story from the start until right up to the kissing incident in the book store parking lot earlier on this morning.
“So Luke's not out then?” Max asked. He felt for his friend; Max knew how difficult it had been for Noah to come out… having to wait until it was just him and his mom before he felt confident enough to tell her he was gay. He had seen his friend grow into an out and proud gay man and he knew how hard it would be for Noah to go back to hiding who he was just because the man he was with wasn’t out too. In fact, he didn't think that his friend could do that.
“He didn't actually say the words. But I saw his reaction, Max. I saw the look of fear on his face.” Noah sighed and shook his head sadly.
“Well then, it seems to me that you need to sit down and talk with the guy… find out what’s going on.” Max patted Noah on the shoulder.
“When did you turn into such an advice guru?!” Noah teased. “You’re right, we do need to talk. But not right now,” he reached for his bottle. “Now, I’m going to have another drink!”
Noah took a long swing. Yeah… he and Luke did need to talk but he was determined that it would be Luke that should come to him this time. Noah had already gone in search of Luke to talk once already. He wasn't going to do it again. No… this time the handsome blonde was going to have to come to him. Even if the waiting would drive him crazy…
