well, my first reaction is that it excludes individuals who feel neither masculine nor feminine, but feel more comfortable in 'masculine' identities/dress/etc and do not call themselves butch, who also experience the hatred that is discussed in this post. For example, my gf. She does not identify as butch, nor do I think she is one, but she gets called 'sir' at LEAST once a day, and she is very masculine, which is threatening, and she is also threatened for it. I could see her identifying with a lot of this, except for the word choice 'butch'. In short, I think that choosing to label this experience as solely butch limits the influence it could have and those who could identify with it. On the other hand, I also commend whoever wrote it for making some valid points and at least starting an interesting dialouge. buuut, this is also hugely problematic for reinforcing dichotomies (sp?) and laying claims to 'worse' oppression than other identities.

Well... I don't think that a masculine woman and an ftm are the same at ALL so this whole thing seems off-kilter. From what I understand and from what makes sense to me, wanting to actually be in the physical body of a man is not comparable to a biological woman who would like to remain in a "female body" with stereotypically masculine qualities. I think this is seriously reinforcing the stereotype that all "butch dykes" want to become men and I don't think that there are social pressures from the lesbian community for these women to "take prescription drugs" or "get surgery" which is what the author is talking about close to the bottom. FTM is not a point on the lesbian continuum and should not be treated as such!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with Elyse here, I think. The two aren't even comparable. Yeah, they are conflated by douchebag ignorant assholes who don't know the difference, but I don't know that it's really a part of the Lesbian Hierarchy (although I may just be ill-informed here ( ... )
