Chapter 7

When they reached the mansion that night, Adam was in sniffle mode. Not that he was still emotionally entangled in the events of that afternoon. No, instead he was in full drama mode. It was an excuse to have Kris constantly comfort him. Not that Kris really minded. Any excuse for them to be close physically was all right with him, but now that they were home, it was time to execute the second part of his plan.

"Adam," Kris said, putting his hands on Adam's shoulders. "Sit on the bed."

"But…," Adam said, staring around the room with the lost look of an orphaned child.

Kris rolled his eyes. Adam was definitely an actor, but this was important. "Adam, sit, please, for me," Kris begged, stepping closer. He slipped his arms around Adam's waist, laying his head on Adam's shoulder trying desperately to get his attention with one of the only tactics he knew would work.

"Are you okay?" Adam asked, running his hand down Kris's back.

Kris allowed Adam to lead him to the bed where they both took a seat. Hiding a smile, Kris scooted to the middle, and tugged gently on Adam's arm. "Sit with me."

Concern filled Adam's eyes as he mimicked Kris so they were sitting knees to knees while holding hands. Adam furrowed his brows. "Are we going to do a séance or something? You really shouldn't mess with the dead. They're worse than genies."

"No," Kris sighed. "I need to ask you something."

"Is it something bad? You're preparing me for something horrible, aren't you?"

"No," Kris said exasperated. "Just listen to me. Remember the promise to follow me thing?"

"Okay," Adam said, in all seriousness. "But I have to tell the truth so be sure you want to know the answer."

"I do," Kris said with a smile because Adam was finally paying attention. "Are there any questions that I can't ask you?"

"Yes," Adam nodded.

"What kind of questions can't I ask you?"

"Questions that violate genie codes or endanger genies," Adam said. "Or questions that would put any human, alien, supernatural being, country, planet or universe in danger. Questions that would…"

"Okay, I get the point," Kris said, raising a hand. "You can stop."

"Thank goodness," Adam said. "There's like an entire book on that subject. I could have been reciting all night. "Why don't you just ask the question you want the answer for and if I can't answer I'll tell you?"

"That would make the most sense." Kris took a deep breath as he tried to make sure that he formed his question in the most productive way. This wasn't one of his strong points since he usually just blurted things out, so he took a minute to figure it out. He realized it would probably take several questions, and as long as he wasn't wishing them then he was probably safe. "What was the name of the criminal you buried evidence for?"

"I can't reveal the name of any past Masters to a new Master," Adam stated.

"You told me Ruby Grace's name."

"She was not my Master," Adam said, with a shrug. "And I never gave you her last name which would have revealed her mother's identity."

"True," Kris nodded. He'd found Ruby Grace and her mother through the child's name and the hospitals in the area along with a lucky article on the miracle caused by Ruby surviving against the odds. He tapped his fingers against his cheek as he tried to figure a way around the question so he could still get the answer he wanted. Adam was surprisingly quiet through this process. "Okay, what is the name of one of his victims?"

"Margaret Handley," Adam said. He waved his hand as if telling Kris to ask some more details.

"Where does Margaret Handley live?"

"I don't know her full address, but she resides in San Diego."

"Is the company she invested in still in business?"

"No," Adam said.

"So, it was a small office?"

"Yes."

Kris jumped up to grab some paper. He jotted down the information he had already gotten and returned to the bed.

"Okay the big question Adam," Kris said, crossing his fingers. "Where is the evidence buried?"

It took Adam a second as if he was figuring out if he could answer Kris, but then he smiled as he gave Kris coordinates where all the evidence was located.

"Are you going to call the cops?" Adam asked, jumping up. "Is that motherfucker going to go to jail for what he did?"

"We're going to try," Kris said. "Come on. I’m going to use the phone downstairs to call the tip line."

"Yes," Adam said, waving a fist in the air. "You are a genius and I think I love you."

Kris froze. After a few deep breaths, he decided Adam was just extremely happy. But his heart was thumping with excitement as the declaration echoed in his head. He slowed down to wait for Adam to catch up to him. They continued downstairs wrapped in each other's arms.

~~~~~~
"Katy."
The voice boomed so loudly that it rocked her bottle. A feeling of queasiness upset her stomach and she sighed as she turned to smoke so she could appear before the Council. She only hoped it was important because she had a new box of Godiva chocolates to indulge in for the evening.
"Yes," Katy said, returning to her human form as she appeared in the Council chambers. Drafts from the cold wind swirling around the mountain peak swept through the long marble hall making her shiver in her scant genie outfit. One day she hoped that some women were appointed to the Council so maybe she'd be able to wear something more practical to these meetings.
"It's Adam," the Chief of the Council said. He glanced briefly to his left and right to make sure the other eight members were still deferring to him. They were all nodding as the Chief added, "He's out of control and something must be done about him."
"It's always about Adam," Katy said, throwing her arms wide. "What's he done now?"
"His Master is making him answer questions about his former Masters and this is dangerous to not only us, but the repercussions to humans could be devastating."
"Has he broken any of the rules?"
"Not technically."
"So, why are you bothering me?" Katy asked flippantly, studying her nails. "He only has three more days with Kris and then he has to move on. He's agreed and knows this is best for everyone."
"This human is making Adam yearn to be human," the Chief barked. "That will not make him a good genie in the future."
Katy crossed her arms. "They're cute and they're in love. Leave them alone. It will be over soon enough."
"If I didn't know how cold your heart is," the Chief said, planting his hands on the table in front of so he could peer down at Katy. "Then I would think you were rooting for them to succeed with this futile plan of theirs."
"It will only be amusing when Adam gets his heart broken. He will be much easier to mold," Katy said, tossing her ponytail. "Don't worry about it. They won't succeed. Not if I have anything to say about it." She bit her lip, hoping they didn't see that two of her pink-tipped toes were crossed.
"Fine, but make sure that by midnight on Thursday that Adam has returned to the fold."
"Yes, sir," Katy said, turning back to smoke and heading for her bottle before they could ask any more questions. She sighed as she slumped back on her couch with a double chocolate truffle in her hand. "What am I going to have to do to make sure you two get it right?"
Tomorrow she would have to visit Adam and see what was going on. If she had to, she could always whisper something in Kris's ear to help him along.
“Kris, hurry up,” Adam called. “The news is about to start.”
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” Kris said, racing in from the bathroom. He was still pulling his t-shirt down as he jumped onto the bed. “Turn it on, man.”
Adam had fully intended to turn it on, but Kris's wet hair sticking out in a thousand directions had transfixed Adam with its adorable boyish charm. He licked his lips as he stared, until Kris met his eyes. The confusion on Kris's face melted into a look of happy realization, as they slowly moved toward each other to meet in a kiss that made Adam yearn for all the things he couldn't do with Kris. When they finally broke apart, Kris grabbed the remote and turned on the news. It wasn’t until Kris cuddled into his side that Adam was able to tear his eyes off the beautiful man next to him. He kissed Kris’s temple before turning to the see the story of the day.
“Today authorities arrested Nathan Fillmore, former CEO and founder of Fillmore Investments. Led by an anonymous tip they were able to recover the evidence that led to the arrest,” the pretty newscaster said. “Local forensics teams are baffled by how it was possible for Mr. Fillmore to place an almost 500 pound safe beneath an equally large boulder. Sheriff Charles Brown told our news team that the search for the evidence was only conducted after the tipster was able to relay information that could only be known by someone with intimate details of the crime."
"So, how do you feel now?" Kris asked, as they watched officers lead a handcuffed Mr. Fillmore to a police car.
"Good," Adam said. "And feeling a little less guilty for being a part of it. I really hated helping him. It sucks that we have to fulfill the wishes of the evil as much as the good, but there has to be balance."
"Well, there is one less evil person on the streets because of you." Kris brushed back Adam's hair. "I just hope that after everything is gone through that there is still money left to give back to those he swindled."
"I hope so, too," Adam said. He switched the television off. "I really appreciate you doing this, Kris, but we can't fix every wrong that was committed by a bad wish."
"I know, but I was hoping that meeting Ruby Grace and having Mr. Fillmore arrested would help you become closer to fulfilling your father's wish." Kris said. "You've been nicer today. Did you even notice? You even shared food with Allison."
"She doesn’t eat much," Adam said, defensively. He shrugged. "I guess I feel different." He flopped back on the bed to stare at the ceiling. There weren't any answers there either. "It's you, Kris. I don't know if I could be the same if you weren't here to help me. You're kind of like a moral compass for me."
Kris lay on his side next to him. "You have to find it on your own."
"Without you there doesn't seem to be much purpose," Adam said. He didn't want to hurt Kris, but even if he was changing, it didn't seem to be taking him any closer to being human. Although, he knew that if nothing else, he would examine his Master's intentions more carefully in the future. He didn't know if he could remember these lessons without Kris or if he would even want to after another forty years of near solitude filled only with the occasional selfish and greedy person demanding things that meant nothing compared to not having someone who loved you. "Please, promise you won't give up on me."
"Never," Kris said. "We're going to find a way to make you human."
Both of them fell silent. Adam was as content as he could be for the moment. He was trying to memorize the sound of Kris breathing so when he was alone in his lamp he could close his eyes and try to replay it in his mind. Maybe then he wouldn't feel so lost when Kris was gone.
…to be continued
