Kris had barely walked into the studio before Allison was running to him. She threw her arms around him even while she was jumping for joy. Adam had to laugh as Kris bounced with her to keep from toppling over.
“Everybody is back,” Allison said when she finally settled onto her feet. “Come on, Kris.” Then she peeked over his shoulder and her eyes fixed on Adam. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know you had someone with you.”
“It’s okay,” Adam said, gently smiling. He didn’t want Allison to feel as if she’d done something rude. He held out his hand. “Hi, I’m Adam.”
“Nice to meet you, Adam,” Allison took his hand. “I’m Allison.”
“I’m glad to meet you, too. Kris has told me some really good things about you.”
“Thanks, Kris,” Allison grinned. She nudged Kris with her shoulder. “Why didn’t you tell me about this cutie? Secrets between friends aren’t good, you know?”
“Sorry, Allison,” Kris said, slinging an arm around her shoulders. “You’re completely right. I shouldn’t have.” He kissed her cheek. “Forgive me?”
“This time only,” Allison said, shaking her finger at Kris. “Now come on we have to do the rehearsal thing.”
“Are you going to be all right?” Kris asked. “I’ll be back to check on you in a bit.”
“Of course, I’ll be fine,” Adam reassured Kris.
Except it was a big lie. Adam was jealous. As soon as Kris was gone, he hid in a secluded corner of the studio. A few times during the morning he would hear Kris singing or catch a peek of him as he did his group number, and not once did he ever look in Adam’s direction. He wondered if Kris even missed him or would miss him if Adam disappeared for good.
"Probably," Adam muttered. "But only because then he wouldn't have his last two wishes."
That wasn't really fair and Adam knew it. If Kris knew their time would be up on Thursday, he would be stuck to Adam's side, and doing everything he could to turn Adam human. But it seemed that the fates weren't on their side on this one. It would take a miracle and Adam didn't believe there was any out there for him.
"Hey Adam, what 'cha doing?" Kris asked, leaning over Adam's shoulder to whisper directly into his ear.
"Damn it, Kris, don't you know better than to scare a magical being," Adam scolded, jumping up. Now he really felt bad about doubting Kris. "I could have turned you into a frog or something."
"Then you'd have to kiss me and turn me back into your prince."
Wearing a sly smile Kris stepped closer to Adam, which didn't really bother Adam at all. Actually it gave him lots of ideas of things to do with Kris when they were alone, but he would take what he could get. He pushed all of his negative thoughts away to cherish what little time he had left with the man in his arms.
"Yeah, and who said you were my prince?" Adam asked, tugging Kris by his hips until there wasn’t any room between them.
"You did," Kris said, looping his arms around Adam's waist. Lifting his face, he made a request, "Now kiss me."
"You're not a frog," Adam teased, trying to lose himself in this moment.
"We can practice," Kris said, rising to his tiptoes.
Adam gave Kris what he wanted. There wasn't much he wouldn't give Kris, except the one thing Kris truly wanted. But, he did what he could, and that was to give them both memories to hold onto once they were torn apart. The kiss was slow with all the hungry overtones of two people who knew that what they had found was truly precious. Every stroke of their tongues was meant to please, to build the need between them. If he could freeze time, Adam would choose this moment to be lost in forever.
"Adam, I want to stay with you," Kris moaned as he pulled back. "But I've got to get back to rehearsal."
"Are you going to get a break soon?" Adam asked, holding onto Kris's wrist, rubbing his thumb over Kris's flesh. "I need to go somewhere."
"I'm sorry," Kris said, looking over his shoulder. "I don't think we're going to be breaking all day."
"But you took one the other day?" Adam pleaded. He was suddenly scared that he wouldn’t be able to tear Kris away. "Just for a few minutes, please?"
"I'll see what I can do," Kris said, returning to kiss Adam's cheek. "No promises."
"But we only have…," Adam clamped his mouth shut. "Nothing. I'll figure something out."
"What were you going to say?" Kris asked.
Adam took a step back. He'd just blown everything, but he had to answer Kris. So, he did the only thing he could, he grabbed Kris's hands and held them tight as he said as gently as he could, "We only have until Thursday and then I have to leave."
His words made Kris appear as confused and lost as Adam had thought they would. It made Adam’s heart ache to know that he was responsible for doing this to Kris.
"No," Kris said, shaking his head. "I haven't made my last two wishes. Isn't that the rule? You have to stay with me until I have made all three."
"I know, but they don't like this whole thing we're doing…about me becoming human and they want it over with."
"It's not fair," Kris said, looking so forlorn that it made Adam feel like crying. "You can't leave me."
"I don’t want to," Adam pulled Kris tight against him. "If I could stay, I would, but I have to follow orders."
"We’ll have to figure out how to get you human by then," Kris said, pulling away. A determined expression took over the sadness that had been there, as he somehow kept his words strong and steady. "I’m not losing you.”
“I’m trying to be good,” Adam said, vowing to himself that he would redouble his efforts to follow Kris’s directions. Leaving a brokenhearted Kris behind would leave him haunted for the rest of eternity.
“I know you are, baby, I know,” Kris kissed the corner of Adam’s mouth. “Where did you want to go?"
"Home," Adam said.
~~~~~
With that one word, Kris knew he had to make Adam's desire come true. Adam always spoke so bitterly of his past and his relationship with his father that if he said he wanted to go home, then it was big. Maybe it would be the change, the moment that reversed the wish that made him so cynical. At least, Kris hoped so and he added a little prayer, still not knowing if God cared about genies, but he figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
So, with a little manipulating the rehearsals, added with some begging from one of the two men who might win this season, Kris managed to get two hours free to be with Adam. After getting approval, Kris took off running before anyone could change their mind to find Adam. He wasn't at the food table, nor was he in his secluded corner anymore, and he had to search for Adam. Someone pointed him down the hallway toward the executive suite, and Kris slowed down as he moved down the row of the fancy offices.
About halfway down the hallway, he heard Adam's voice. Kris stopped outside to find out what he was doing, but he was spotted by Mr. Betterman. He raised his hand in a wave, unsure if he should interrupt their conversation.
"Adam, it looks like your young man is here," Mr. Betterman said, patting Adam's knee. "Don't worry. Keep believing and I’m sure that everything will work out."
"I hope so," Adam said, rising to his feet. "Thank you for listening."
"You’re welcome," Mr. Betterman said, turning to Kris. "Good luck on your excursion, boys."
"Thank you," Kris said. Once they were far enough away from Mr. Betterman, Kris asked, “Did you tell Mr. Betterman the truth? About you being a genie?”
“Yeah,” Adam said. “I needed to talk to someone about everything and he seemed like a good choice. Besides he’s not going to remember.”
“Adam,” Kris said, stopping. He looked up into those blue eyes that always came to life when they were looking at him. “What happens if you become human? Will he remember?”
“Yeah, but it’s not going to happen.”
“So, you’ve given up?”
“No, I’ll never give up…for you.” Adam took Kris’s hand. “Because of you.”
“But you don’t think it’s going to happen,” Kris said, wiping his face with his hand. He didn’t ask, but stated, because the news that they only had three days left to reverse Adam’s father’s wish had changed all of his plans for helping Adam. The next three days he would be working practically around the clock for the finale show and wouldn’t have much time to help Adam. No wonder Adam had given up. It seemed impossible…except for one thing - his last two wishes. Kris pushed the thought away, but he had given it life and it wasn’t going to go anywhere. “I’m not going to give up either.” He took Adam’s hand. “Let’s take you home.”
They barely spoke on the way over, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable silence. Adam kept his hand on Kris’s thigh while he drove the borrowed car where Adam directed. Both of them were lost in their own thoughts, but Kris knew their thoughts were in the same place. They were both trying to figure out how to get Adam to become human so they could be together, but that wasn’t the only reason, Kris wanted Adam to be happy. Even if Adam didn’t believe it, he was a good man who deserved all the best that life had to offer. Maybe, just maybe, that’s what Adam’s father was trying to show Adam when he made the wish that changed everything.
“Turn left,” Adam said, pointing down a tree lined street.
It appeared to be suburban heaven. The houses were middle class with minivans and SUVs in the driveways while children played on manicured lawns. The parents that Kris saw were watering their lawns or carrying in bags from shopping. It seemed like the place for a perfect childhood.
“Wow, this is where you grew up?” Kris asked.
“Yeah,” Adam said. He pointed to a house with a wide front porch. “We always held our shows there. Patty’s mom was cool about it and she would always let us go through her attic for props.” He was smiling as he pointed at another house. “Steve’s mom made the best cookies on the block. We always headed over there when we got hungry. It was great, and then we grew up. We all headed out to our own lives, and I didn’t keep up even if we did see each other during summers and holidays. It just wasn’t same anymore.” He pointed again. “There. That little park.”
Kris pulled the car to a stop. Adam was already climbing out of the car and Kris had to hurry to catch up. Not that Adam was going very far. The lot was the same as most of the other ones on the block. Deeper than it was wide and in the center was a fountain with several tiers of cascading water that glittered in the afternoon sun.
“Adam, you okay?”
“This is where the kitchen is,” Adam said. “My mom wasn’t the best cook ever, but she was always trying.” He laughed. “The experiments we called them and sometimes they weren’t bad, but sometimes they were inedible.”
Adam was lost in his childhood memories as he moved through the house in his mind. Kris could see the hallway that he walked down and the dining room where Adam recalled where each of them would sit every evening, the living room where Adam pointed out where the standalone television sat and then the hallway that led to his father’s den.
“My dad would be here on Saturday mornings doing the household accounts as he called them,” Adam said with a snide chuckle. “It’s serious business to keep a family together and doing well, he’d tell me. Even after I told him that I was gay, he told me that I would still have to take care of a household even if it was mine. Back then, you didn’t come out. You had to hide it, and there certainly wasn’t talk about getting married and having a family. They probably would have carted you away to an institution.” He deepened his voice before he continued, “Son, you have to know how to take care of these things. It’s what a man does.”
Talking about his father seemed to take something out of Adam and he sat on the edge of the fountain, waiting until Kris was there beside him, holding his hand, before he continued.
“My dad was always teaching us,” Adam said, covering Kris’s hand with his own. “Neil, he’d teach about women and how you had to take care of them and be the man. Me, he taught everything but how to be in a relationship. I guess he assumed I would always be alone or never thought that anyone could care about me. I don’t know, but I’d take a word or anything from him now.” He stopped talking as a sob came over him. “How could he do this to me? To us? He tore us apart and they’re frozen somewhere in this spot. I miss them, Kris, I miss them so much.”
Adam laid his head in Kris’s lap as he cried while Kris played with his hair.
“Maybe he was trying to get you to see something,” Kris said. “Something you still haven’t realized.”
“Stop, just stop it,” Adam sat up, wiping at his face with the back of his hand. “All he wanted was for me to do things his way.” He stood up. “He loved me as long as I was his adoring son, but the minute I wanted to do something that wasn’t in his plans, he did this to me.”
“Adam, there has to be more than that,” Kris said. “Maybe you need to stop pushing aside those feelings, let it hurt and find the truth. What he wanted you to learn.”
“No, I remember what he said,” Adam said. “That I was selfish and ungrateful and that I didn’t deserve to have what I did.” He shrugged. “He’s right. I am.” He pushed Kris away and stood. “Even now, this whole week, I’ve been trying to get everything out of you that I can. You’ve fallen for it all and it’s been great...”
“Shut up, Adam,” Kris snarled. “Don’t pull that bullshit with me. You don’t think that you’re worth loving because of what your father did, but I’m not him and you’re not the man that he said you are so give up spouting the same line. Don’t try to push me away because I’m not letting you go until there’s not a choice in the matter. Do you understand?”
Kris didn’t wait for an answer as he stomped away. He was hoping for a breakthrough, but every time they got close Adam would slam a door shut. Adam refused to believe anything but the worst about his father and about himself. He didn’t know how to make Adam believe in himself, but he was still determined to find a way.
“If only there was a way around the rule of turning Adam human, maybe there would be time for him to learn how wonderful he truly is,” Kris said, dropping his head into his hands. “Please show me a way.”
Kris heard Adam approaching, but refused to look up until arms locked around him.
“I’m sorry,” Adam whispered. “Forgive me.”
Kris lifted his face to look at Adam, and as always got lost in those eyes. So lost that he never saw the petite blonde watching them from only a few yards away.
