Chapter 10

"You know that he did it for you?"

Adam rolled his eyes as he turned to face Katy. "I should have known you were involved in this somehow."

"Well yeah, it takes care of a lot of my problems." Katy inspected her nails. "You're no longer on my roster so I don't have to keep being bitched out because of you and your continual screw ups." She shrugged as she met his eyes. "Face it, Adam, you were never meant to be a genie."

"I never wanted to be a fucking genie," Adam heard a car start. It was Kris pulling out into traffic. He felt nothing at watching the man he loved leave him. He put his hand over his heart. The love was still there. It was strong within him, but there was no pain over the loss. No aching need to wail over the loss of their love, or to bemoan how life was unfair, and no desire to chase after him. He remembered the change in Kris after the wishes were granted. It hit him then, the pain for Kris, and how horrible he felt. "He doesn't even know why he hurts so much."

"He knows he loved," Katy said. "He also has the song he wrote for you." She tilted her head. "It was meant to remind him of why he hurts."

"He knew then that he was doing this?"

"Come on. He knew that he was going to lose you either way - whether you stayed a genie and got sent away or if he wished you to become human and he forgot you. He wanted something tangible to remind him that you were once with him."

Tears pricked at his eyes as a pain he hadn't expected overwhelmed him. He hurt for Kris. "What good is a song going to do when he's all alone?"

"That song is going to skyrocket him to international fame," Katy said softly. "It's not going to be on the first album. The producers won't consider it his style, but he's going to sing it anyway, and people are going to love it. In a few years, it's going to be the number one wedding song."

"I knew he was good enough," Adam said. "He never needed to win Idol, did he?"

Katy shook her head. "No, he just needed someone to love and someone to love him in return. Don't forget that he believes in you."

"What good is that going to do now?"

"You're an idiot." Katy sighed. "He's only gone for a few minutes and you're back to being the same self-doubting Adam you were only a week ago."

"It's over," Adam yelled. "He's gone and I'm here. What fucking good is going to come of this?"

Katy arched a brow as her lips thinned. "He's human. You're human. Go after him. He fell in love with you once, maybe he will again and you can make all the hurt go away."

"After he wins, I'll come off as a stalker fan…"

"Damn it. Do I have to spell everything out for you? You always were a pain in the ass."

"What?"

"You were a genie for forty years and you still don't realize how fast things can change. Kris believes in you. I'm out of here," Katy started to walk off with a wave over her shoulder, but as the mist formed around her, she said, "You never could appreciate all the good things you have…"

It was the same thing his father had said to him before he'd made his wish. Never had he wanted to hit someone so badly before. Adam squeezed his hands into fists, but something was pinching him. He looked down to find he was holding car keys. Blinking he looked around him. His family's house was there in front of him and in the driveway were two cars. One of them was a black mustang that matched the emblem on the keychain he was holding. The other car must belong to Neil.

Everything faded away and as if it was only yesterday, he remembered being in the same spot when his friends dropped him off. There had been another mustang in the same spot. The one his father had bought him when he graduated from high school. There had never been a moment in life when he hadn't wanted for anything. His father was always working so that they would be okay and his mother had always been there for every school event, skinned knee and tear they'd cried.

His life had been good and yet he had always been looking at the horizon wanting to see if there had been something better beyond it. He was the idiot that Katy had called him.

Relieved that his home had been returned with Kris's wish, Adam raced up the sidewalk and through the front door.

"Asshole, you're home," Neil said, barely glancing up from the television.

Never in his life had Adam been so happy to see his brother. Always the bane of his existence and yet his best friend, Neil was someone else he'd never fully appreciated until he had been taken away. Now, Adam had a second chance.

"Motherfucker, go to hell," Adam retorted, falling on his brother's lap to hug him.

"Get off me," Neil protested, pushing at him.

"I love you," Adam kissed his brother's cheek. "Damn it. I've missed you."

"You saw me last weekend, asswipe," Neil pushed at Adam. "Now get the fuck off me."

"Whatever," Adam said, giving his brother an affectionate punch in the stomach. "Where's mom?"

"In the kitchen." Neil scrunched up his face. "Be careful. She's experimenting again."

"Be nice," Adam punched at Neil before heading into the kitchen. He skidded to a halt in the doorway. His mother was humming along to the show tunes that were playing on the iPod stereo on the counter. Scattered in front of her were various spices while she squinted to read a recipe taped on the cabinet in front of her. A lump formed in his throat at seeing his mother. She was the same woman but with a more modern hairstyle and clothes. "Mom?"

"Adam, you're home." She put the spoon down before she met him in the middle of the room. "It's so good to see you."

"I've missed you so much," Adam's voice cracked as he hugged her tight. "I love you."

"I love you, too," Leila smiled. "You okay?"

"Yeah, it's just been rough the last few days."

"Well, then its good you're home. Do you want to talk while I cook?"

"What? So, you can blame me for making you miss a step," Adam put his hands on his hips. "I'm not giving you that chance."

"Very funny," Leila smiled despite her shaking her head. "I saw it on Emeril the other day. It looked really good so I'd thought I'd try it."

Adam smiled. That was his mom. She was always ready to try something new. It was like time hadn't stopped. She and Neil were the same while everything around them had changed. He was just glad that they didn't know what had happened to them and that four decades had passed while they'd been asleep. It made him wonder if his father remembered.

Adam hoped so because he planned on telling him exactly what he thought of that wish he'd made.

"Is Dad here?"

"Yes, he’s in his den. Why don't you go see him?"

"I'll be back," Adam said.

"Oh, good because I need to ask your advice," Leila picked up the spoon again.

"No problem.” There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t help his mother with now that she was back in his life. “What do you need help with?"

"One of my new clients," Leila sighed. "She wants her living room done in this bohemian theme and who better to ask…"

"Than your wild child?" Adam finished. It seemed that with all the other updates time had given his mother, she'd also capitalized on one of her talents. He couldn't be happier to know that she wasn't still stuck in the house trying to be like every other mom on the block. Maybe she was happier, too.

"Well, yes," she said, giving him that smile that he knew was meant only for him.

It felt like he and his mom were still on the same wavelength. Although his parents loved both of them, it always seemed he was closer to his mom while Neil was closer to their father. He waved before he headed down the hallway to the den. The door was closed and he'd always been taught to knock, but this time he didn't. He was too pissed to care about etiquette.

He was surprised to find his father standing in the middle of the room. Even more surprising was the appearance of Mr. Griffin sitting in the corner. It seemed his father hadn't used all his wishes. Mr. Griffin winked at Adam, but Adam was focused on his father who had tears streaming down his face. All his anger dissipated as he rushed to him.

"I'm sorry," Eber whispered as he closed his arms around his son. "I'm so sorry."

"How could you?" Adam sobbed. "It's been so long."

"I didn't know. I never wanted you to be sent away."

"Daddy, it hurt so much," Adam clung to his father. "It's been so long."

"I know. All I wanted was for you to be here and then I sent you away. It's been hell because all I could do was wait, hoping that you would find a way back."

Adam stepped back, wiping his face. "What did I do wrong?"

Eber cupped his face, using his thumbs to wipe at Adam's cheeks. "You came back with all these plans to leave again. You didn't even stop long enough for us to catch our breath. We were so relieved when you came home after that summer."

"Why? I was fine," Adam said, circled his hands around his father's wrists to keep him close. "I was here."

"Oh son, you have no idea of the hell we went through," Eber said. "Don't you remember that it was different then? We didn't have cell phones, the internet or anyway to get a hold of you. We had to wait for you to call us and you didn't do that often. The news every night was filled with all the horrible things you kids were doing like the drugs. I knew you weren't stupid, but they talked about the police beating kids up, the riots in other cities, and the deaths from the overdoses and we watched every night while watching the phone. We were worried sick about you."

"I didn't know," Adam said, shaking his head. He'd been having so much fun that summer. Not once did he watch the news or read the newspaper so the bad news his parents were bombarded with never reached him. "I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you."

"I know you didn't," Eber said. "But you didn't think either. Your mother cried a lot that summer. You were gone, and that was killing her because you were always her baby. It made me angry that I couldn't make her feel better." He shook his head. "Then you came home and said you were quitting school and taking off to make music." He grabbed Adam's shoulders as if he was going to shake him, but he stopped himself. "Didn’t you know there was a war going on? That the only thing keeping you from the draft was college?"

Adam felt sick. The reality of Vietnam had never touched him during his magical summer. There had been so many around him avoiding the draft. He remembered the protests with the public burning of draft cards. It would have destroyed his mother if he'd been sent to war. He admitted to himself that he never would survived the horror of Vietnam. A latent fear of what he could have become made him shiver. He wondered if becoming a genie had been a hidden blessing.

"I fought in a war," Eber said softly. "I saw so many die, so many lives destroyed. Every day of my life I thank God for letting me come home and back to the woman who loved me. You were conceived the day I came back. We weren't even married yet."

"Dad!" Adam smiled though the embarrassment of his father’s confession. But everything his father had told him was becoming a reality that he couldn’t deny. "I'm sorry. For everything that I put you and mom through.” He ducked his head. “You were right I never did appreciate a fucking thing."

"You just forgot. You're a good man, Adam, with a good heart, but you get caught up in things and allow them to spin out of control."

"Why couldn't I reverse the wish?"

"Don't you remember I said that I had to see you appreciate what you'd been given?"

"It never would have happened unless I was turned human by someone else," Adam said. No matter how he would have tried to become a better man, he never would have become human. He was thankful that Kris loved him enough to let him go. "I'm just sorry that Kris had to pay the price."

"Maybe he doesn't have to," Eber said, taking Adam's hands. He smiled. "I wish that you get all the happiness you deserve."

"Wish granted and thank god I'm out of here," Mr. Griffin said, vanishing without so much as a mist or anything.

Adam was doubtful that anything major was going to happen. He didn't think he deserved much when he heard Aquarius playing. Something was vibrating against his leg. He dug into his pocket to find a phone. Pulling it out, he glanced at the display. Kris Calling was lit up.

"Oh hell yes," Adam yelled, hitting the button. "Kris is that you?"

"Hey baby, I thought I’d lost you."

"I missed you too. Have I told you that I love you?"

"Not yet," Kris chuckled. "But I'm glad to hear it because I love you, too."

"So what's going on? When can I see you?"

"Well, I know you just got back with your parents, but I wanted to know if you wanted to come down to the studio and hang. I've got you a backstage pass and then I've arranged for a limousine to pick your family in a little while for the show. I can't wait to meet them."

"Tell Kris we can't wait to meet him either," Eber said, grinning.

"I love you, Dad," Adam mouthed. "I'll be there in a few minutes," Adam said to Kris. "I can't wait to see you."

After he hung up the phone, Adam hugged his father again. "Thank you for everything. Never again will I go a day without letting you know."

"A missed day here and there will be fine," Eber said. "Oh and son, if I ever see a lamp again, I'm running as fast as I can in the other direction."

“Fuck yes, me too," Adam shuddered as he turned to run upstairs to find the perfect outfit to see Kris in.

~~~~~
Tapping his foot, both in impatience and in time to the music, Adam watched as Kris rehearsed a group number that involved everyone from the original thirty-six who'd started the season. Kris was singing with Danny in the middle of the stage, but their eyes kept colliding as they sought each other out. The number couldn't be over soon enough for either of them.
“You have yourself quite an amazing young man there.” Mr. Barrowman interrupted Adam’s thoughts of what he was going to do when Kris was free.
“Yes, he is,” Adam grinned. “I’m just happy that we’re back together.”
“You’ve taken quite a journey to be together.”
Adam felt the blood drain from his face. “You remember everything I told you? About me being a…?”
“Yes, of you being a genie,” Mr. Barrowman smiled. He leaned closer. “I promise I won’t tell anyone.”
“I would appreciate that,” Adam said. He was surprised that the Genie Council hadn’t erased those memories. “It could be a bit awkward.”
“Yes, it would.” Mr. Barrowman patted Adam’s shoulder. “I know you’re concentrating on Kris, so I’ll keep this short. I’d like to offer you a job.”
“A job?" Adam asked. Nothing else could have diverted him from Kris any better. "What kind of job?”
“I need a right hand man. Someone to help me to create the new show and to help bring it to life. Are you interested?”
“Interested? It sounds like a dream come true,” Adam said. “I can’t believe it.” He looked over where Kris was rehearsing. “To be honest, I still have a year of college left and my heart is wherever Kris is.”
“Adam, all I need to know is that you’re interested. Everything else is details.” He pulled a card out of his pocket. “Call me next week and we’ll work it out, okay?”
“Thank you,” Adam reached out to hug Mr. Barrowman. From the first moment he’d met the older man, he’d felt a connection and now to be offered a job with the man he’d admired for so long opened the future as never before. “You will definitely hear from me.”
“You’re welcome,” Mr. Barrowman said, patting Adam on the back before letting him go. “It’s going to be great, I just know it.”
Adam didn’t hesitate. No matter what else happened, his future was with Kris.
~~~~~

As soon as the director told them they were done, Kris didn't hang around for any small talk with the others. He headed straight for Adam who was holding his arms out as Kris got closer. It was like coming home as he stepped into Adam's embrace.

"How did my memories come back?" Kris asked, stepping back. One moment he'd been drowning in a deep depression and then everything he'd been through in the last week came back. It was then that he knew Adam was coming back to him. He just didn't know how.

"My father made his last wish," Adam said. "He wished for me to have the happiness I deserved and then you were calling me."

"Me?" Kris squeaked. "I'm the happiness?"

"Yes, you make me happier than I'd ever been," Adam said, pulling Kris close again. "And thank you for wishing me human, Kris,” Adam whispered. “No one has ever done something so amazing for me. I can’t believe that you would make yourself so unhappy for me.”

“You’re worth it.” Kris kissed Adam’s cheek. “I’m just relieved that it worked and that we're back together.”

It was more than just relief. It was like being given the gift of heaven.

“You knew that the key was my father?” Adam stepped back, but he held onto Kris’s hands. “How?”

“It was something that came to me in my sleep,” Kris shrugged. “It was so clear that I took it as an answer to my prayers.”

“Maybe it was,” Adam smiled. “I’m just happy that it worked.” He grabbed Kris’s hand and placed it over his crotch. “Feel it, baby, it works.”

Beneath his hand Kris could feel Adam’s cock harden. He couldn’t help but trace the length enjoying the feeling and knowing that later he would get to fully explore all of Adam’s body. He smiled.

“That’s wonderful,” Kris pulled his hand back. “I can’t wait until we’re alone.”

“Me either,” Adam grinned.

“Oh my gosh,” Allison said, racing over to them. “They’re screaming for you, Kris.”

Allison barely glanced at Adam until he put his hand out. “Hi, I’m Adam.”

“Ha-ha, very funny,” Allison laughed, pointing from Adam to Kris. “Why does he do that every time that I see him? He acts like I don’t know who he is.”

“You remember me?” Adam threw his arms around Allison. “Damn, I love you, baby girl.”

“Love you, too,” Allison made a face at Kris over Adam’s shoulder. “But Kris and I need to get back to rehearsal so can we continue the love fest later, dude?”

“If you must,” Adam sighed heavily. “I hate to let go of either of you, but I understand.”

Kris felt the same way as Adam. He wanted to hold onto Adam and never let him go. Despite them being returned to each other, this new life had to continue. He could only have faith that things would continue to go their way.

“I promise I will be back to you as soon as possible,” Kris said, pulling Adam’s face down to kiss him. They got lost in each other until Allison tugged on his hand and he was forced to leave him. When he walked away, there was no fear, only the expectant joy of being with Adam again soon.

~~~~~
What if it was all a dream? What if Adam wasn't real? What if he was still a genie and would be taken away from him?
"That's stupid, Allen," Kris muttered to himself, twirling the room key between his fingers. "It's past midnight. He'd already be gone. Now, get your ass in there."
Taking a deep breath, Kris unlocked the door and pushed it open. Instantly all his fears were gone. He could smell pepperoni pizza in the air which could only mean that Adam was here. Knowing that he was real and waiting for him made Kris practically sprint into the bedroom of the small suite he'd been given. After all, the American Idol deserved the best, didn't he? He was just glad that he was done with press and didn't have to leave for the airport for a few hours. Hours which he was supposed to sleep, but Kris knew he'd be doing anything but sleeping.
There on the bed was Adam. Fast asleep with a pizza box beside him and the television remote in his hand and typical of his Adam, he was stark naked. Kris smiled when he noticed that Adam was definitely human because his cock was erect. Trying not to awaken his former genie yet, Kris removed the pizza box, picked a few pepperoni pieces to pop into his mouth, kicked his shoes off and left his shirt on the floor.
"Hey," Kris said, crawling on the bed. "Wake up, baby."
"You're back," Adam whispered, reaching for Kris. "I tried to stay awake."
"It's okay," Kris nuzzled Adam's cheek, placing kisses against the corner of his mouth. "You're awake now." He trailed fingers along Adam's length lying against his belly. "In more ways than one."
"I didn't even do anything," Adam held his fingers up in the Boy Scout's oath. "I was waiting for you."
"Thank you," Kris said. "Is it really real? Are we together…forever?" The question made him sound like an insecure teenage girl, but he was so afraid that magic could still separate them.
"Yes, we're together," Adam whispered as if he was afraid, too. "You've used all your wishes and so has my father. So, magic is done interfering in our lives." He cupped Kris's face. "I'm never letting you go."
"I love you so much," Kris said. "I'd say I hate magic, but it brought you to me. If your father hadn't made his wish and if I hadn't picked up that lamp, then we never would have found each other."
"Yeah, we would have," Adam laughed. "But I would have been in some old folks home where you were doing charity work. I just don't know how turned on you would have been by me with wrinkles and no teeth."
"I still would have looked into your eyes and fallen in love," Kris said as solemn as he could. "Don't you remember my song? It was your soul that made me believe again."
"I'll never forget a word," Adam vowed. "And one day you can prove you still love me with those wrinkles."
"Well, the no teeth part might be helpful," Kris said placing Adam's hand on his crotch which was fast imitating Adam's in hardness.
"I have never bitten you," Adam laughed. "At least not there."
"No you haven't," Kris kissed Adam as he crawled on top of him. "And now it's time for me to return the favor from last night." Sprinkling kisses along Adam's flesh, Kris slid down Adam's body.
Never in his life was he happier. Not even winning Idol could rival this moment of triumph as he was able to make love to his genie. Even if Adam was no longer magical, he was still able to make Kris's wishes come true.
The End
