Is there anyone on my FL that can give me advice on trademarks and copyrights?

I've started working on my original novel again. Except I don't have the idea for just one novel, but a series of novels based on a small island. I already have planned a website, a twitter and facebook to follow events on the island using a journal I created as something to read until the first book is done. Since I want to be able to 'claim' this island as mine so that I can build this interest and possible merchandising (I figure if I'm dreaming I may as well do it big) and that no one else can sweep in and take it. So, should I trademark the island name? And if I do this will a publisher if they want to publish the book instead of me selfpublishing, would they be able to use the name? And is it trademarking that I want or copyrighting?

Thank you for any help!!!

Well, I'll start with the usual disclaimer. Since I'm not licensed in your state, it would be advisable to consult with a local attorney before you take action ( ... )
