Envy's Office, The Hegemony Compound, Brazil, Monday

Jan 04, 2016 11:58

It had been an unbelievably good week and a half or so. Envy had barely left Todd's side at all. It'd been almost like when they'd been kids. Except with much more kissing. But it wasn't a reunion that would last, yet. Todd still had a semester left at Vegan Academy (yes, he was a vegan and yes, that was why he could fly to the moon and punch it). ( Read more... )

"I may be leaving."

She hadn't meant to announce it like this. Hell, she hadn't meant to announce it all because until now she hadn't really accepted there'd be anything to announce.

If pressed, she might've admitted she wasn't even entirely sure when she'd decided to get up and march across the hall and make said announcement, with her arms folded across her chest.

That was good. It meant Peter didn't have to put too much effort into making sure she didn't see him flinch.

He was older now. Wiser. He would not make the same mistakes he made with Valentine. No matter how badly his own inner fourteen-year-old wanted to reach out to hurt, to maim, to poke at her insecurities--

"Then don't call me the next time one of these idiots dumps you," he called, turning back towards his terminal. "I've got better things to do."

Envy slammed his door shut so hard it fell off its hinges.

And then promptly fell over.

Well. She wasn't fixing that. She didn't even look back when she stalked into her office.

Peter ignored the way his fingers were trembling over the keyboard.

This was not how he had planned for this to go: she'd say she was leaving, he'd nod and be understanding about it, he'd tell her he was proud of her and encourage her to kick some ass. It'd be picture perfect; he'd be able to ignore the sick feeling in his stomach in the knowledge she was doing well for herself, pursuing something that would make her feel satisfied.

Instead she was running after some guy over some infantile romantic gesture. Infantile, but apparently enough to drop their work over, all the good they'd been doing - enough to drop him over.

It hadn't been supposed to hurt like this.

Peter shut his eyes.

Then he opened them again.

He was going to pretend they weren't foggy until they found something more useful to do.
