Youko had taken a break from Keiki's lessons in order to clear her mind, which was spinning with a thousand terms and references. Under Keiki's direction, her mentors had started into the entire line of rules dating back to the inception of the Kingdom of Kei, including their posthumous names, origins, length of royal term, first and any following ( Read more... )

Nowadays Shoukei liked to wander almost as much as Youko did, although she wasn't quite so bad. She had her share of work around the palace though her primary job was helping Youko in any way she could. To think that there had been a time she had hated her so. She was enjoying a bit of a break herself when an exasperated kirin came asking where his queen had gone. Laughing, Shoukei had told him she didn't know and then watched him wander off to find Suzu, sighing all the while.

Deciding the least she could do was warn Youko, Shoukei decided to look for her herself. She was surprised she found the queen before Keiki, resting peacefully by a lagoon. Walking over, she abruptly say down beside her.

"Hiding from Keiki again?"

Youko sat up and smiled at Shoukei. "Just his lessons," she replied. "The ministers are trying to avoid his sighing by cramming me full of information I can repeat back to him. I just don't know how many more -Ou's that I can recite."

"How are you, Shoukei?"

She laughed. "Is that so? Well he's looking for you. I just thought I'd warn you."

"Me? I'm just fine. I'm busy, but I suppose I'm not nearly so in comparison to you."

Youko heaved a sigh in a very impressive mockery of the Kirin, then couldn't keep a straight face and laughed. Keiki's sighs really were the stuff of legend.

"Actually..." she admitted as her laughter died down. "It's not the historical facts I wanted to get away from. That part is easy... it's no different than studying for exams in Hourai. And I know that it's all standard knowledge that anyone at Shougaku needs to learn."

She looked back at the waters of the lagoon. There were beautiful fish swimming nearby, attracted to the unfamiliar instrusion of bare feet into their realm.

"Actually, I've been getting... a little homesick lately."

Gyouten, like all of Yei province, was one of the richest areas in all of Kei because it was the home of Kinpa Palace. Youko decided that an ideal place for them to visit would be the crowded Chimata District, an area of artistic shops and quaint bistros. Here, Youko felt that they could blend in, hopefully without giving themselves away as residents of the palace. (The last thing Youko wanted was to cause a panic if they realized their ruler was strolling around. Not to mention Keiki's heart attack.)

Although she never said anything aloud, worried that she would make Shoukei unhappy, but she envied Shoukei's unconscious regal bearing. It was so natural, she'd never be able to mimic it.

"Here we go," she said, patting the blue-haired girl on the shoulder and then stepping into the crowd.

It hadn't taken Shoukei too long to learn Kei's geography. It was, of course, much different from Hou's but the general structure was at least the same. She followed Youko as she stepped into the crowd.

"Wow, it sure is lively! It seems more and more people come to Kei everyday."

Unfortunately a lot of them were refugees from Kou
