Character: Jade Harley.
Fandom: Homestuck.

Personality: Jade is mainly a very geeky and quirky girl. Even before she first appears in Homestuck we're already allowed to see that quirkiness in her typing style. Her font is an almost slightly obnoxious bright green and her tendency to go overboard with exclamation marks and question marks at the end of some sentences also already show how she's easily excited. Jade also frequently (or at the very least, more than most other characters in the series) uses smilies in her text.

This image of Jade is only further emphasised the moment we actually see her rather than just read what she's typing for the first time in the comic. Her buckteeth, big glasses and slightly messy long black hair make that geekiness and quirkiness of her show on the outside as well. Her hobbies are immediately proclaimed to be gardening, nuclear physics, gadgetry (one should always have at least five computers on them, after all) and antropomorphic fauna, which mostly mean she's into the furry fandom. (Although not into things like fursuits, which Jade proclaims to be 'just ridiculous'.) This range of hobbies and the rather eccentric nature of some of them are enough to drive the point home that Jade is a rather strange girl. And let's not even get started on the point that her Fetch Modus (the way of getting things out that she stored into her inventory/Sylladex) is not quite based on math or logic like some of the others but instead forces her to play all sorts of well-known games, including Memory, Pictionary and other various well-known games. Jade is playful and very often silly, not getting really serious unless the situation calls for it.

Even if she comes across as rather strange and quirky, Jade is actually a really sweet girl. She's very enthusiastic about things and easily excited about the smallest of things - two random Squiddles in her room suddenly attaching themselves to each other (becoming 'tangle buddies') is enough to make her jump up and then proceed to clap and grin in glee. Perhaps part of this excitement can be explained by the fact that Jade grew up on a rather isolated island and therefore easily discovers things she has never seen before. (She's also excited once she gets on her planet due to the snow she has never seen before, even if that excitement is cooled down a bit by the sudden cold.) She's a hopeful and optimistic girl who tries to make the best out of any sort of situation. Jade is shown to be rather forgetful to a point where she has to wear all sorts of coloured rings on her fingers to remember the important things. She's even prone to random bouts or narcolepsy where she just falls asleep right on the spot; this is often a cause of trouble in Homestuck. (Although later on it is implied Vriska's mind control is responsible for Jade's sudden naps.) In general Jade can come off somewhat childish and naive at times, and can even be seen as a bit of a ditz.

But even though all this Jade is pretty capable of taking care of herself, much more so than one would think after getting a first impression of her. She pretty much grew up fetching for herself after her grandfather (and yet not her grandfather, homestuck paradox clones sure are weird!) died in a rather unfortunate and ironic incident, although her 'dog' Becquerel more or less has helped her along the way by for example bringing her back to her bed whenever she had a narcoleptic attack again. Her grandfather was also a big fan of the hunt and insisted that Jade had to carry a rifle with her whenever she left the house. Because of this Jade is actually pretty good with a gun and even fights imps who teleport all over the place once she enters the Medium. She is, however, pacifistic and would rather avoid fights given the chance. At one point she proclaims that her 'cross-hairs would never settle on an innocent creature, anthropomorphically persuaded or otherwise'. Once she actually has to get fighting she can suddenly toughen up a lot though.

Jade can also seem pretty wise at times, but this was at first mostly caused by her knowing more than the others due to being able to see future events in the clouds covering Skaia in her dreams. But most of the time she remained cryptic about how exactly she knew these things when asked about it. She does have some good natural intuition though aside from the things she saw in her dreams, considering she seems to have a knack for picking the right cards in memory in her first turn.

She's a nice girl with an extreme loyalty to her friends. Jade values her friends a lot and never minds helping out in some way or giving them advice when it's needed. When things are taking a turn for the worst in the dream world Jade practically sacrifices her own dream self so John's can survive, showing the lengths she goes to for her friends. But Jade tends to be nice even to people she isn't particularly familiar with. She forgives Tavros even though he reveals that he's actually the one responsible for her grandfather's death and when he tries to ask her out afterwards she still kindly and gently turns him down instead of being blunt and gives him advice, even after the revelation from before that.

There are, however, times when Jade just snaps. The first time we really see her distraught and out of it in the series is after she has her first dream after her dream self died - suffice to say it isn't a really great experience and is coming quite close to god tier High Octane Nightmare Fuel. She gets a lot more grumpy and even throws away all the reminders on her fingers, telling herself that she doesn't need them anymore. Jade in general toughens a bit up after that experience, although she still has her silly side from before the dream too. After that experience she also starts to really snap at the trolls contacting her rather than just telling them that they're mean or just blocking them. In particular the conversation with multiple Karkats from different times arguing with each other while she's also there causes her to get really mad. The moment with the most rage for Jade has been her encounter with Jadesprite though. Jadesprite was caused by Jade prototyping her dead dream self which allowed Jade to talk to her. Jadesprite was practically a more whiny version of Jade who couldn't stop crying and saying it was all useless - but this aggravated the normal Jade to no ends. She didn't want to believe the crying selfish Sprite was the same person as her and flew into a rage, slapping Jadesprite over and over again while telling her to "PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER YOU BLUBBERING GODDAMN PANSY" and even cursing along the way. So while Jade doesn't easily get angered, there are a few things that can anger her and practically throw her into a fit of rage.

History: at the wiki!

Timeline: After learning about cloning frogs from Kanaya.

Abilities: Jade is pretty skilled with a gun (which in Homestuck would translate to her Strife Specibus being Riflekind) since her grandfather insisted on her taking a gun with her whenever she went out of the house. No, seriously, she even plays fetch with her dog Becquerel by having him catch a bullet when she fires it. (Then again, Becquerel isn't the most normal of dogs either.) At first it seemed like she had some kind of psychic powers which allowed her to know about future events before they even happened, but in the end it was revealed this was only due to her already having awakened her dream self and seeing those events in the clouds that cover Skaia on Prospit. Her dream self has died though, so she has no way of seeing future events like that again. Jade is also pretty smart, even if it doesn't always show under the ditziness - she has an interest in nuclear physics and a love for technology, after all, so that has to count for something.

Sample writing: As Jade opened her eyes to a blue sky with white clouds she immediately knew something was wrong. After all, even to a person who wasn't always the most perceptive the change in surroundings was easy to notice, since there was no snow at all. The cool snow falling down that she had been observing just a bit earlier had somehow completely disappeared and the building had been replaced with a different stone one. Her first reaction was a slight panic - after all, even if this was just part of the game someone would have told her about this in advance. And if she had just fallen asleep again (she didn't really remember falling asleep, but she usually didn't when other people told her she had) someone would at least be trying to contact her by now, right? Oh, but maybe one of those imps had decided to randomly teleport her around again while she was sleeping. Jade let out a slight huff. Geez, those things were just the most annoying things ever.

Oh well, it wasn't that much of a problem. She could just contact John or Dave or Rose (even if the latter had been rather absent lately) and they would probably know what was going on or what to do. And if not she could always contact Karkat or one of the other trolls if it really came down to that.

Jade quickly tried to use her enhanced glasses to contact any of them, but.. it wasn't working somehow. Just at the moment when she needed it. But it were moments like these that reminded her of why exactly one should always make sure to carry at least five computers on them. And so she quickly tried using her Lunchmuffs, but they couldn't contact them either. Nor her computer in her jacket, or her sneakers, or--

Okay, now it was time to panic. Even though she couldn't spy any imps around, being stuck alone in an unknown place without being able to contact any of the others to ask them didn't sound like much good news. For a moment she considered the thought that this might be a dream, but then again, her dream self was dead (well, not anymore, but she preferred to not even touch that matter while she had other things to try to focus on) and she was pretty sure she wasn't busy being her dream self right now. For one she still had her normal clothes and her computers, even if there was the addition of the somewhat cute addition of a twig crown of sorts on her head.

Just as she was at the point of giving in to panic and frustration Jade spotted a different device lying on the ground near her feet. And just spying that gadget was enough to complete forget about her panic and instead let out a short squeal as she dived to pick it up quickly, studying it for a moment from all possible angles before actually starting to use its interface.

And then she discovered the drawing function, squealed once again and started to make a few elaborate designs for a computer in the shape of a Squiddle. Even if thinking about them was a little more awkward after that nightmare, she couldn't help it! They were just too cute to ignore and--

So Jade carried on until she realised ten minutes later that she should have been trying to contact someone to help her out instead of getting caught into designing a sixth computer to carry on her.

Surely there would be at least someone out there, if not just her friends, and someone would come to help her out. She would just have to keep thinking postively! What was the worst that could happen? Jade stopped halfway through her design of linking multiple computers together to form a tangle buddies network and instead turned over the device to start typing out a message.
