Writing against type

I'm writing a fic right now that's somewhat challenging in its characterization, and it got me thinking: how do you tackle characters dealing with emotions or reacting to situations they've never come close to encountering in canon? Or them consciously choosing to change who they are as a person?

A character like that, I'd play on subtleties and character development over time, gradual and with active progression and evidence that plays into those new emotions and behaviors. That kind of character wouldn't change his ways externally right away, so even making changes while he's alone //introspection// or with Kevin only, you know like putting on a facade and not seemingly changed in front of others.

This does help! That's a good point about the introspection, too, and how I can use it to gradually soften the character. Thanks, I really appreciate the advice! :)
