Evolution vs. Holocaust

Dec 14, 2005 17:30

So I heard this bit about how that crazy leader in Iran is purporting that the Holocaust was fabricated to justify creating the nation of Israel. This got me to thinking about truth and evidence. After a short conversation with creatrixx (who had read my original post over my shoulder) I realized that I hadn't though about my original statement ( Read more... )

Fuck you. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Any reasonable person accepts the holocost due to easily observable evidence that doesn't need a shrewd scientific mind to interperate. There are too many personal accounts for the government to have brainwashed all of them. Too many people have lost family from the Holocaust. There are just too many things you can look at for it to be reasonable for the Holocaust to have been fabricated. Especially for the reason the Iranian leader gave: for Europe to give the jews their own state. I seriously doubt they would have gone through that much trouble.

Evolution, on the other hand, seems much more abstract to people. Yes, there is a lot of evidence for it and of course I believe in it, but the kind of evidence that is available for it is still interpretable. And religious people can always argue that god is changing creatures, not genetics.

Depends on what you mean by Evolution and what you're trying to prove. Evolution in one sense can be a concept, which is radically different from a historical event in that it can be proven in current time with observation and experimentation.

A historical event is always going to rely on past evidence and will thus get fuzzier and fuzzier with time (as opposed to clearer as scientific concepts tend to do). Sure the Holocaust is pretty universally accepted now, but in 5000 years will the details still be so sharp? In 5000 years Evolution will only be better supported than it is now.

So I think the two things aren't really comparable because they're just not the same and their concepts of evidence are dissimilar. What happened to you yesterday? Can you prove it to me?

Wow, I never thought about it but the person that posted above me has a good point. As of right now obviously the holocaust is fact. Many people have dead family members that they knew, some of us have family members that were in the troops that freed the camps. We have thousands of first hand accounts of what went on (from people on both sides of horrors ( ... )
