This is probably not the most intelligent of questions, but how well do you plan your fics? Like, in how much detail? Because I'm wondering if not planning much is the reason I gets stuck on so many WIPs? I usually have a general idea of the direction, and a few random images I want to capture, but no idea how to fill the scenes in between ( Read more... )

I usually outline before I start, write about 1000 words and then realize my outline is bad, and re-outline. most of my writing is pretty character driven, so I usually have a line or two of dialogue or some general plot I know I want to convey, and then try to shape the story around it. then, as I write, I realize all my ideas are crap, and restructure. It depends on the story -- sometimes I figure out what's going to happen in detail. Sometimes I figure out what's going to happen in detail and sometimes I start writing with absolutely no idea where it's going. I don't think I've ever outlined, though. For me, if I figure out everything beforehand I'm a lot less likely to write it, because there's nothing left to discover. If that makes sense.

I don't plot out a map, but like you, I have these scenes that I want to string together into a cohesive, coherent story line, sometimes I even have enough of a plot with a planned beginning, middle and (sometimes) end, but I have so many WIPs that I think I need to start outlining each story meticulously (the way we would a research proposal or paper, maybe) just to jump start my writing out of procrastination station. Whether or not the story then eventually wants to go in the planned route doesn't matter as long as I take it to that point in the writing, as long as I begin.

I just hate starting/writing the beginnings of a story. I want to start in media res everytime and clearly that doesn't always work. Actually, I just need to get rid of these WIPs.

i hand write. i have this little notebook full of notes and fic and crazy arrows of redirection. then there are outlines, too (with more arrows).

i do most of my outlining in chats with other writers/readers and then just star the chats. it gives me a reference of "i want this scene, and then this happens, and this is how it ends" without taking away my freedom to change things on the fly. (by 'outlining' i mean me saying "I WANNA WRITE A FIC WITH THIS CHARACTER AND SOMEHOW THIS HAPPENS" and then figuring out what other characters get involved. then i sit down to write, and just go in blind.)
