I think I have just enough intuition and willingness to experiment that I can pull off something passable. The light red/dark red panel actually gave ma a huge clue today. I tried painting over the dark color with a light drawing, and over the light color with a dark drawing. Now I know light on dark is what I want, so I know how to build up the layers. I can sponge nearly-identical colors over solid areas to cover up my horrible brush work.
I'm either going to look back in ten years and say "OK, that was the start of something cool", or, "what in the fsck were you thinking?!"
