This afternoon I saw Priscilla Queen of the Desert with my friend Sally. It's pretty much exactly what you would expect from the movie being turned into a musical-- fun, lots of flamboyant, discolicious drag queens and a plot that doesn't exactly resemble Shakespeare. I wouldn't kill him (probably), and I wouldn't dump him on the spot, but pulling a stunt like that with me would provoke an agonizing reappraisal of whether or not I wanted to be involved with him in the first place.

I mean, really: in that situation there is tremendous social pressure not to say anything except "yes" -- which means it is the last place in the world a decent human being puts someone whom they care about and respect to make a crucially important decision.

I am torn between "Aww!" and this, but I am going to take the optimistic stance and assume that Johnny knows Terry well enough to know that it would be a well-received gesture (just as I'd hope my long-term partners know me well enough to know what kind of public surprises [not this kind!] would and wouldn't be well-received by me).

Your sense of fun does not necessarily align with what other people enjoy. Presumably your partners already know how you would feel about such a thing.

Judging by their body language, there was no "crucially important decision" involved-- it was more a matter of formalizing what they already both expected in the form of a delightful surprise.
