two things...

First thing:  I  was noticing that this weeks "Bones" was set in a sci-fi convention.  I was terribly excited to see this and it occured to me that at least two of my favorite shows now had con episodes.  The other obviously being "C.S.I." with the furry episode.  So I wanted to do a dvd disc of my favorite shows with sci-fi con episoed or related ( Read more... )

It was the Jena 6, and there some serius problems with that particular case as well once the facts were all out (exaggerations, no special "tree," etc.). It turned out to be a great fund-raiser for race hustlers. But that's another story ( ... )

Any of the three cartoons you mention at the end would have been acceptable, to my mind. Context is everything, everywhere. It has to do with how different people see the world. I take offense at the notion that one must be a Obamabot who thinks he's the Messiah in order to be offended by this cartoon. Al Sharpton and his like will feed off any racial dissent, but this is wrong, and you know it's wrong.

When you hear the word "porch monkey," you don't think of Italians, or Irish, or Jews. And the police don't shoot white people on nearly as regular a basis as they do blacks -- ascribe it to the fact that blacks tend to live in violent areas of society, if you will, but that doesn't make the statistic less true. I look forward to the Post's retroactive depiction of JFK as a potato-esting bogtrotter.

I endeavor to write precisely, Rob, and meant no offense to you or others who were offended, per se. But there is a difference between offense and high dudgeon, and I have read far too much of the latter on LJ and elsewhere on the web. As a racist equivalence between chimp and Obama, the cartoon would have been much too ham-handed, even for the Post. But I also knew how it would be misunderstood, and the editor should have known. For that reason, I agree it was wrong. And if it was approved in the hope that just such outrage would be stoked, then the approving editor would deserve to be canned.

As for the police, you can guess what an anarcho-capitalist thinks of them, generally.

I have kept myself largely free of this fracas so far -- not realizing it would resonate quite as much as it has -- but in pondering others' opinions, I found my dudgeon was quite high indeed. My Gus Dudgeon. (I was listening to Madman Across The Water really loud.)

Here via a link...friend of T's, too! :)

Enjoyed reading what you had to say on the cartoon.

There's a good con reference in one Psych's first episodes. I believe there are also some good animated series references, and I'll see if I can remember them over the next day or so. I LOVED the Leverage scene, and think that's one of the best shows I've seen in a while.

Hi, Pat. It's Gerald. I posted on this, and a related issue, in my journal.

Took a look at your feel on it. WoW, you got some angry person after you (I think I know who it is also....strange). Anyway, this discussion has done a couple of things. One is that I have a better understanding of what people are calling 'trigger events' or gut reaction moments that are completely upon you before reflection kicks in. I get why in this society with its history, this cartoon would get the trigger off. My problem is that, try as I might, I cannot see the racism in any way in this cartoon. I won't go into details as they have all been listed in several responses already but it just does not exist here....for me. You also reminded me of the New Yorker cover which caused all the shock but was quickly defused with the satire card and accepted. Had forgotten all about that ( ... )

Yeah, and if Angry Person would respond to what I actually wrote, and not what she appears to believe I wrote and what I actually wrote be damned, she wouldn't be angry. As time goes on, I am losing hope that this is going to happen.

Pat, the New Yorker thing and the New York Post thing are all about context. If you read the links showing the chimp-cartoonist's other works, you would see that he has a history of pulling that kind of bullshit.

But honestly? If you don't see how it's racist, even after blackiestark explained how President Obama enters into it, and even after you read the seventy bazillion words I posted on it, there's nothing I can say that will help you get it.

People should be enraged over racial profiling or fatal shootings of actual black people by the police (I have seen episodes of cops, they arrest drunken surly white people all the time without shooting them) not stuff where, to defend it, you have to argue if it even exists. You mean like black people have been screaming about disproportionately brutal police ( ... )

There was a CSI with Little people at a con too (Or was that the lady Heather show?).

And When you do a "con" marathon..."MaraCON" or "CONathon", Don't forget Galaxy Quest.
