heroines_fest! Prompt- kicking ass as Batgirl
It was a cold night and the clouds above threatened the city below with rain. Batgirl stood in between the dark sky and the even darker streets on the highest rooftop in a five block radius. She looked from east to west and north to south, taking it all in when the first of many raindrops began to fall.
Batgirl went lower, closer to the ground. She moved like a shadow. Silent feet and movements as quick as lightning. Soft winds would be felt before she ever would. Her eyes were focused on the street below, ears listening for any suspicious sounds. That's when she heard the cry for help.
She followed the cries to an alley, where she stopped two stories above to investigate. There, a girl who seemed to be Cass' age was choking a boy much younger. The boy continued to call for help, but something was off. Batgirl moved down for a closer look.
The boy and the girl...their bodies were at odds with their actions. The boy wasn't truly frightened and the girl had no intention on hurting him, that much was obvious to her by watching them a moment longer. And yet, the boy called for help again and the girl continued with her hands around his neck.
Batgirl moved around the building to come up behind the girl. In an instant, she maneuvered the boy away and had the girl pinned against a wall.
"You okay?" Batgirl asked the boy.
"Whoa... Y-Yeah, I'm fine. I didn't even hear you coming. Dude, that was tight!" The boy was practically giddy until his eyes travelled from Batgirl to the girl, whose arm was twisted in an ugly way behind her back, looking ready to snap in two. "Oh shit! Let her go! She wasn't really hurting me!"
It was only because he was telling the truth that Batgirl released the girl, who crumpled to the wet ground. The boy helped her up.
"I'm sorry," the girl apologized, "We were just trying to get your attention."
Cass searched down the alley and above it, trying to find something or someone attempting to set this trap. But, there was nothing.
"That's my brother, Michael," the girl continued, "My name's Lizzy and I go to Hudson U."
Nightwing's school? Could there be a connection?
"I'm in high school," the boy added, a smug grin on his young face.
"I think you mean middle school," the girl corrected, rolling her eyes, then added, "Ignore him. Please. Anyway, I wanted to write a story on you for the school paper."
Cass wasn't sure she understood. Even with no visible threat present, she was starting to grow concerned. She was quite uncomfortable with the adoring looks she was receiving. If she took a step back, she could turn and reach the fire escape. Within seconds she could be up on the roof, back on patrol, and far away from these two strange individuals.
"We just think you're awesome!"
Cass looked at the boy.
"Yeah, you kick ass, girl!"
Behind the mask, Cass smiled a little. She was awesome? She'd heard Robin and Nightwing use the term often enough, but usually when talking about video games or Alfred's food. But all too quickly her smile faded. She remembered where they were and these kids, who were foolish enough to come into Gotham on a rainy night looking for her, were putting themselves in danger.
"Go home," Batgirl ordered, "Not safe."
"Okay, okay, we'll go home," the girl promised, "I just wanted to ask you a few questions. Please?"
Batgirl shook her head. "Go home."
Gunfire erupted all of a sudden. Four men hurled down the alley towards them, while they shot at each other.
Cass frowned, but moved quickly reaching the boy first and leaving him safely behind a large dumpster. Then, she ran back for the girl who stood completely frozen even as the men ran straight towards her and bullets flew inches from where she was. Cass grabbed her and placed her next to her brother.
"Don't move," Batgirl warned them and then she was off. The kids poked their heads around the dumpster in time to see Batgirl glide through the air disarming one man after another in a couple of seconds. She kicked and punched and made painful contact numerous times, but the men weren't able to lay even a finger on her. A few precise moves more and the men were unconscious, hands tied behind their backs, ready for police pick-up.
"Holy shit! That was awesome!"
"Oh my god," the girl sounded breathless, "I thought you were cool before, but, but you're...amazing."
Usually the people Cass saved were too scared to say thanks, let alone praise her, but these kids... No, focus. They needed to get somewhere dry and safe.
"Go. Home."
"Yeah, we will. This was so dumb, I'm sorry. My car's right over there. I just- thank you. You saved our lives."
The boy was smiling at Batgirl as his sister dragged him to the car. Cass waited until they drove away. Then, she headed up to the rooftops once more.
...
A few days later, Oracle asked Cass to stop by the Clocktower before patrol. She arrived early - the sun was still out. Cass walked around the living room while she waited, grabbing an apple from a blue bowl to snack on. then, the kitchen door swung open.
"Hi," Barbara smiled, "Thanks for coming."
Cass smiled back.
"I wanted to show you something," Barbara said, rolling past the coffee table towards her workstation. She could have probably forwarded the email Dick sent, but Cass had a tendency not to bother with anything not Bat related. Despite Tim's efforts to get Cass into gaming, the internet, and whatever pop culture deemed important, she just wasn't interested.
She typed something into the computer, then moved aside for Cass to see. Cass' reading had improved greatly and she read the entire headline silently on her own.
Why The Most Kick-Ass Bat In Gotham Is A Girl!

Barbara was smiling when Cass looked at her again.
"Want to talk about it?" she asked.
Cass shrugged, unsure. She could see Babs was pleased about the story in the online school paper - obviously it didn't compromise them in any way - but Cass wasn't sure she understood why it mattered. She'd only done what she had been trained to do, what she had done four more time in the next two days. It's the kind of thing they all did night after night.
"It's all true, you know?" Barbara promised, "You're a kick ass Batgirl!"
Maybe when she got better at expressing herself, she would tell Barbara what it meant to hear that from her, but for now Cass only smiled and finished her apple.
