Leaning against the edge of the counter, his arms crossed over his chest and legs crossed at the ankles, the boy released another long suffering sigh.
Only a few feet away, Bruce inhaled deeply to keep from growling something he'd only end up regretting. Then, took a moment to compose himself due to yet another interruption.
"What is it, Dick?" he asked instead, his voice fairly level. Since deciding to take him in, Bruce wondered if he had made the right decision. They were still getting used to one another, especially since their personalities were so vastly different.
"Oh, it's nothing..." came the murmured reply.
Alfred warned Bruce to be patient with the boy. It would be his first Halloween without his parents.
"I am certain, Sir, I have no need to remind you what that was like."
Bruce had only glared at Alfred, who simply turned on his heel with that unaffected air he carried himself with, and left.
But, Bruce remembered all too well. And it had been horrible. Everything after his parents' death had lost all meaning. Everything. Including what once had been a favorite holiday of his.
He did not want that to be Dick's life.
Concerned blue eyes traveled to where the young boy sat. After another quiet sigh, Bruce shut the computer down.
Being in the cave without the constant hum the computer provided was strange and Dick's gaze snapped up. He watched on with piqued interest. The computer was always on because Batman was always on. That was simply how things were.
"Wh-what are you doing?"
"It's time to get ready."
Dick pushed off the counter.
"Get ready for what?" he wondered, his eyes wide in surprise.
"It's Halloween," Bruce answered as if that explained everything.
"I know it's Halloween, but you said-"
"Alfred should have your costume ready upstairs."
The boy's entire face lit up. His smile, full of gratitude and anticipation, tugged at Bruce's heart strings.
"Really?!"
Dick could not contain himself. He rushed over to wrap his arms around Bruce's waist.
"I'll be ready before you can say trick-or-treat!" he added, his laughter following him out of the cave.
Bruce found himself smiling as he climbed the stairway, then promptly shook his head. Though...perhaps Alfred was right yet again, perhaps Dick's presence would be good for all of them.
