Perhaps it was foolish, but once she arrived in New York and stopped by her apartment to drop off her things, she went directly to The Stork Club. The place was still empty, just beginning to come alive for the night.

"Ready to order?"

Blinking away her thoughts, Peggy glanced up.

"Oh, I apologize, miss," the server said looking over at the empty chair, "Are you waiting for someone?"

Peggy smiled sadly, the pain sharp, piercing, only two months old. "Yes," she replied. "I am. He owes me a dance."

"Shall we give him a few minutes then?" the server asked, smirking.

"No," she shook her head, smile fading, "He's not coming."

Trying not to look confused the waiter simply stood there, at a loss for words.

"I'll just have a bottled Coke, please."

The waiter walked away and she sighed. Really, she should have ordered something else, something stronger.

Different scenarios had replayed themselves over and over in her mind, involving a miracle or two, but it didn't matter what she longed for, Steve wasn't coming back. As Peggy sat there, wondering if it was only the lure of what could have been that would continue to plague her, haunt her- no. It had been more than that. It had been him.

Even if it could never possibly happen now, Peggy knew she was better off for having known him. His heart, his inner strength. And, that smile didn't hurt either. But, more importantly, he was a fighter, just like she was. Just like she would continue to be.
