Perhaps it’s his life flashing before his eyes that makes him remember the last time he’d heard her voice. "Traitor," she’d spat. "I should kill you now. If I see you again, I will."
He's saved her the trouble.
"Idiot!" she shrieks after she’s dragged him out of sight of the battle. "Jumping in front of me like some kind of fucking hero!"
He tries to concentrate on the hand that strokes his cheek, but Aunt Bella’s curse working merrily and painfully away on his insides makes it very difficult. "Just evening out my karma," he manages.
"Did you forget your math, Draco? Saving one life doesn’t make up for three," she bites out, and then her mouth thins like she's considering whether to regret saying that. He'd laugh, only his ribs are possibly melting into his lungs.
"Don’t hold back the punches now--who knows when you'll get the chance aga--" He coughs abruptly into his hand, considers the blood and something-else he’d rather not think about on his fingers. "Damn."
"Shut up. You won’t die, don’t." Her hands are vises on his wrists. "I still--I don’t hate you, Draco. Please.”
"Lie to the dying man. How considerate." He gasps raggedly and his back arches. "This dying business, by the way, I don’t recommend it. Oh, Merlin."
"Stop acting so--I’m not lying, you stupid thing." Bickering to the last. That was his girl.
He’s fairly sure his pancreas just shut down. "Ladies don’t like a man who’s killed her family. It’s a turnoff, I hear."
"I can’t turn it on and off! You're right and I'm lying and I do hate you, I’ll never forgive you, but I'm also..."
He kisses her because he's learned a thing or two about mercy, and he suspects that making her say it might be worse for her than dying horribly is for him--and also because his voice box seems to have given out for the last time. She cries and says he tastes like bile and kisses him again.
