I try for honesty, too. However, on the "How are you" front, since I am disabled, I generally answer that I'm doing well, unless of course I'm not, and don't go into details unless asked for more information. The question isn't really a status check as much as a salute and a hope that one is doing well, anyway. And "doing well" in my case means the pain is at a manageable level and I'm in a decent mood -- it's a better answer than "fine" and has more subtext. "Tired" used to be a good answer for me, but now my meds make me that way all the time so I've filed it under "functioning normally
