My sister is very Mirabelle-centric and finds interacting with other children to be off-putting. I think it's because having to communicate at that level is abnormal and uncomfortable, but with your own child (or, in my case, my twin's child) it feels more than ok. So we share a similar boat of discomfort, haha.
And other kids can be such jackasses. I used to work at an elementary school as an after-school and summer camp aid while going to college (it paid well, not because I care for kids) and it took me a long time to feel comfortable, especially when one child is being unreasonable/bratty/obviously extremely misbehaving. It's tough, since I'm not the parent and that kid knows it. They are quite deceptive little brains and navigating that super thin line between teacher and overstepping the boundary into parent territory is very difficult. I'm sure wedeconstruct has a million stories about her nanny experiences where I would be like HELL NO.
