anaka composed an excellent email to governor Schwarzenegger regarding Mayor Newsom's recent actions regarding gay marriage.

If you are an American, I urge you to do the same thing.

If you are Californian, I beg you to do the same thing.

Take a stance on an issue worthy of taking a stance.

One day soon, my friend, I need to give you a crash course on how the US Constitution and American federalism work. As well-intentioned as these people's efforts are, they ultimately go against 200+ years of jurisprudence and precedent. If change is to happen, it needs to happen the right way or else any "victories" will be pyrrhic ones at best.

First, the idea of learning how the US Constitution and American federalism works is a terrifying proposition. I hate politics. Canadian. American. Any. Hate politics.

Second, I think any change in a positive direction (as I view this to be) is a good thing. Change "in the right way" may need to follow later, but sometimes baby-steps are the only way to more forward.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right. The mayor of San Francisco has no authority whatsoever to change California law and I think that he'll ultimately undermine the cause he's supporting by looking like a vigilante. This is something that requires hearts and minds to be won over. Otherwise, the backlash will be much worse.

First, the Mayor's actions were clearly to make a statement. I doubt, highly, that he believes his actions will last. I'm certain he knows that the state will step in and revoke all the licenses he's granted thereby nullifying the marriages. But, he took a stand ( ... )

I really hope that the California constitution is changed so as to at least get rid of any ambiguous language that may bar gay marriages, even if they can't or won't put in specific language to allow it.
