"Hi." Dan smiles when he sees Jean-Eric's face come into view on his laptop, absently reaching out to stroke over his cheek on the screen.
"Hi." Jean-Eric yawns back, sits down on the sofa before Alice begins howling, audible even from the living room. "Five minutes." He points at the screen and drags himself to his feet, pads off. Dan can't help the little giggle that escapes him when he realises that Jean-Eric is still waddling slightly. He'd teased him horrifically when he'd started waddling, regretted it that one time when Jean-Eric had been completely over-emotional and had cried, refused to let him in their hotel room and left him sat awkwardly in the corridor waiting for his apology to be accepted.
"Yeah." Dan sighs, puts his chin on his hands and waits, smiling at the chaos that he can see on the screen, even if he can only see the sofa. It's covered in baby stuff, toys and blankets and then Jean-Eric returns, Alice propped against his shoulder, crying even louder now she's in the same room as the laptop. "Hey little one." He says, bites back the tears because he misses them and its not even been a day yet. Jean-Eric shuffles Alice and himself around, smiles down at her when she's settled in the crook of his arm and sucking hungrily at her bottle and then turns his attention back to Dan.
"Sorry."
"Don't be, I get to see her now, don't I?" Dan moves as close as he can to his laptop screen so he can see them better. He hates that its not a brilliant connection, but its better than a phone call, better than not being able to contact them at all.
"I think she misses you too." Jean-Eric says, eyes flickering between Dan watching them and Alice, staring up at him with mostly-open eyes.
"I wish you could be here." Dan admits.
"I wish we were too, but she's too tiny and I think the jet lag would kill me, I am so tired." Jean-Eric sighs, yawns, and leans back, propping his feet up by his laptop.
"Are you going to sleep when she does then?"
"I have washing to do. But it can wait." Jean-Eric laughs. "Who cares that I don't have any clean jeans."
"I don't." Dan winks, over-exaggerated, and Jean-Eric laughs, has to stop feeding Alice to resettle her because his laughter has disturbed her and then they settle back down again. He's got the hang of this now, practise makes perfect.
"I know that much." Jean-Eric winks back, grinning.
"You doing anything that means you need clean jeans?"
"We were going to go out for a little walk, weren't we?" Jean-Eric says to Alice. "I'm sure that I have shorts that are not covered in puke."
"Going anywhere special?"
"I think that we will go visit Brendon." Jean-Eric puts the empty bottle down and sits up properly, cloth flung onto his lap so he can burp Alice with her sat there. Dan laughs quietly at her sleepy face, smiles when she settles laid on Jean-Eric's legs. He adores watching the two of them interact, has so many photos on his phone of the two of them that's he's nearly run out of memory. And this makes the pain of being thousands of miles away from them fade just a little, watching Jean-Eric makes faces for Alice to stare at, evidently telling her something fascinating in French.
"I'm going to be so envious when she starts talking and is immediately better at French than me."
"She can teach you." Jean-Eric looks up and grins, reaching for one of the soft toys abandoned on the sofa, letting Alice cling to it, pull it to her mouth. All three of them startle when Dan's phone rings, Alice's tiny face screwing up before Jean-Eric distracts her with a new toy and an interesting facial expression.
"I have to go, the team want a preview thing. I'll call you in the morning?"
"Of course. Je t'aime, Dan."
"I love you. Both of you. And I miss you."
"You'll be back soon." Jean-Eric waves, waves the arm of the stuffed elephant he's holding at Dan before he tickles Alice's tummy with it, and that's the image of them that gets Dan through a day of media work. His boyfriend and their baby. His family.
