Birthday Gifts
I watched as his eyes slowly began to shut during the course of my lullaby. His poor bandaged hands slowly loosened themselves from my skirts, and at that moment, I knew he had fallen asleep.
Standing up slowly, so I didn’t wake him, I grabbed the candle from his bedside and walked to the door of his room. Upon reaching it, I stopped. It was my fault his wrist and hands were bandaged… But that was not what I truly felt guilty for. It was the scars I had caused upon his mental state that rattled me. I, his mother, had done that to him, and there was nothing I could do about it now.
Didn’t I owe him at least a little something in return? Earlier that same day, Erik had asked me for two kisses. It would have been a simple request from any other child, but Erik was different. How could I bear to kiss him? He, who had the face of a corpse. Even if he was my own flesh and blood, I could not bear it.
But… could I? I had already put him through so much pain, would it possibly be a sin to give him something kind? No, it wouldn’t, and it was the right thing to do. And, it was time I did the right thing.
With a confidence I didn’t know I had, I walked back over to Erik’s bedside. Briefly, I thought of waking him, but realized no matter how much my confidence had improved, I could never kiss him while he was awake, for he would want to be kissed without his mask on. I knew I could never push back my revulsion of him so far to do that.
Leaning down, I gently kissed Erik’s masked right cheek, then his left.
“Happy Birthday, Erik,” I murmured. Then, I walked out the open door, shut it, and locked it.
I doubt Erik never knew his first kisses came from his unloving mother. Then, I would never have told him, but, now, I regret not doing it sooner.
The End.
I promise I'll actually update with my life later. *gasp* It's actually been... interesting! Well, somewhat that is.
